Unemployment continues to increase as a result of lockdown, restrictions etc and concerns are that it won’t get much better in short term

https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/unemployment-rises-on-the-isle-of-man/

For those who are willing to do it, £250 a week each down on Douglas Promenade. However, that would require some man-management and scheme planning on the DOI's half.

So it won't happen.

No more than a ‘bad TT’.

Thats the reality.

The fear is still strong in some it is.

Thanks Yoda.  Try some simple calculations. There are about 30000 adults under 50 here, and only a very small number of those will have had covid and be immune. Without distancing measures in place, travel restrictions etc, cases of covid tend to double every 4-6 days.  If only 5% of that age group need hospital admission, 1% need ITU and 0.5% die, how long before the hospital fills up, and how many deaths would we see?

The other potential issue is vaccine efficacy.  Is it 90%, 93%? Of the 15000 over 70s we have here, that’s quite a lot still susceptible to disease.

I’m being a bit flippant with the ‘simple calculations’ - it ain’t that simple, and right now the input variables are not accurately known. Give it a month or two, watch how it goes in Israel and the UK, and if things look positive then start easing restrictions, while understanding the likely effects of doing so.

Let's face it, once we 'accept the risk level'...even given 100% vaccination and 94% efficacy, A&E here is occasionally going to be overwhelmed.

Reality: Flu might take 11k people a year, covid will be taking 30k a year for several years (UK).

That will be the new 'normal'.

Kids will not be vaccinated at all till at least Aug/Sept or even later...and not all of them.

Get used to the new reality. This will continue to take a lot of people annually...And the need to expand ICU facilitied x3 for the next 10 years.

Just another risk of being human.

THe ONS figures show about 5 30 to 50 year olds admitted to hospital WITH COVID in a week, with an infection rate of just over 1% in the same period.

Let’s be negative and say 10x that many infections, so 50 in hospital WITH Covid.

Factor in that the vulnerable in that age bracket in the UK aren’t vaccinated yet, consider that pretty much none of them are in ITU, then divide for the fact we only have 30,000 rather than the 100,000 the figures are based on.

I really can’t see anything to stress over.

If we got it 10 times worse than the UK last week we would have 15 30 to 50 in hospital WITH covid, and none in ITU

Particularly given the ongoing resistance to vaccination by the BAME communities, as reported on Sky News today. Still lots of groundless fears and rumours and misinformation being peddled to and by these communities.

Panorama are covering that very issue tonight.

I honestly can't wait for the chance to be able to go for a weekend away in London or Liverpool without having to isolate. But the different mutations that keep popping up do make me wonder how soon that will be. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/15/32-cases-of-latest-covid-variant-of-concern-found-in-uk

I'd love to share your optimising for May/September but I just don't see it.

Who cares?

Open up .....

Won’t happen as there is no appetite for most of the electorate ( and in particular those who vote ) to open borders. They’ll be shut until at least next year and probably beyond. You can’t buck public opinion.
