It's 100% going to be longer than 21 days already. I'd wager 6 weeks at least.

Yeah, job's fucked. You can't run a default position of everyone out in pubs, hugging, no distancing, no masks etc and then also drag your feet when the situation changes. All you do is create a load of super spreaders.

Depending on cases we maybe able to do a staged release like Guernsey eg open hospitality but for sit down meals  only , no wet pubs , face masks etc

We seem to be in a far worse spot than we were the last time around.

Last time, it was handfuls of community transmission, and widespread risk of community seeding. This time, we've got 111 so rammed the phones have broken and 17 cases in a day. Our peak was 32 cases in one day in April.

Kent variant is way more contagious so HQ wasn't kidding when he said brace yourselves. HQ losing it with PM must be feeling the pressure.

The stakes are so high yet HQ et al not only fail to use any initiative until its too late but fail to even take the most basic, common sense actions and then make sure they are followed up.

Pathetic platitudes like:

  • lessons will be learned (Oh God find a new one)
  • we don't want a witch hunt
  • it was a communications problem
  • we  need to look forwards
  • we use all the information available

are no excuse for this. It's not even incompetence as that implies a lack of adequate training or ability. This is such basic stuff it's negligence.

The only real lesson here is that you don't need to be an expert to avoid most of this mess. It just needs hard work, attention to detail and accountability (shock, horror) but most importantly, energetic leadership focussed on success rather than blame avoidance. Politicians and civil servants could not survive this anywhere else.

I think we are in a better position to be honest. We've got the testing, track and tracing up to speed with the vaccine rollout to fall back on. It took months to come out of the lockdown last year, it'll be a lot quicker this time.

The big difference this time is that it was totally avoidable. If the IOMSPCo and IOMG had confirmed their expectations of one another, this situation would almost certainly not have happened.

I meant compared to our last circuit breaker.

Long term, this is our last one with any luck. But I don't see us coming out in 3 weeks and a bit at the rate we're going.

You do realise that there is a possibility that anyone calling himself 'cowman' might be called Howard IRL...

Oh yes I hadn’t thought of that. Yes it’s highly likely that Howard Quayle would register an anonymous account on some minor local forum just to challenge some paranoid wailing covid-obsessed pensioners talking drivel.

Re today's media briefing, media questions:

To Paul Moulton, Helen McKenna Isle of Man Newspapers

There were 4.5k viewers on Facebook for your questions. There will be many listeners on Manx Radio too.

Keep asking those questions. Yes, some people do switch off - there were 7.1k viewers on Facebook at its peak today (10.9k yesterday) - but usually the down turn is after the 'juicy' bits have been read out at the start.

You have forgotten how HRH The Chief Minister and Lord Ashford keep comparing the island, against Jersey and Guernsey.
