IOM Covid removing restrictions

As much as I would like all border restrictions removed, my bet is further loosening of borders to coincide with UK easing, on 17th May with test on arrival with no isolation if negative, with another follow up test.

I am aware that Comin have come under massive pressure by business to open up now, but are fully open borders so soon too much to hope for? To be fair he did surprise us in LD 1 when all remaining restrictions were removed in one go. I await with interest.

That is coming at the end of May anyway and was announced weeks ago.

If they made an announcement to say they were moving that forward by a couple of weeks it would be a bit pathetic.

Fully open  with no isolation or testing - has to be end of May

Will be interesting to see. It is currently 28June.

For some, whatever the omnipotent RG suggests, they presume it to be OK.

She could proclaim the earth is indeed flat and her followers/ sycophants would adopt the same position.

No, I am assuming she knows about labs so, if she did suggest that was possible, then it would be reasonable to conclude that she had thought it through.   As far as I am aware, she has not proclaimed the earth to be flat, which would be an odd proclamation from a scientist.

Anyone following the science...?

Traffic light travel plan will let new Covid variants into UK, scientists warn.

It is inevitable that new Covid variants will continue to enter the country, scientists warned this weekend, claiming there are “obvious flaws” in the government’s system for reopening international travel to and from England.

On Friday ministers decreed that some international travel could resume from 17 May, with travellers from England allowed to return from “green list” destinations without needing to quarantine. Portugal and Israel are on the list, along with South Georgia, the Faroe Islands and the Falklands.

However, it is understood that members of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) are concerned that the government’s traffic light system amounts to “window dressing” and is not based on evidence about the risks of the spread of variants.

What is the point you are making?

Its inevitable that new variants will move around. You dont need much science to tell you that.

What is with you people who keep harping on about variants & visitors to the island will bring diseases, hospitals etc will be overwhelmed etc

Change the record & stop with the scaremongering, everyone over 18 will have had at least one dose in next month or so.

Wow .

Only time will tell.

I'll explain.

Time has already told. Firstly it was not Tony Blairs idea was it? He simply promoted it. OK, genius is a bit of an exaggeration.  No brainer would have been a better statement. Some 'experts' on here were panicking about the mere possibility of not following the' manufacturers recommendation'.

Even a basic knowledge of immunology would tell you that it was very possible that the optimum time between doses was going to be more than 4 or 6 weeks. It just had not been tested. Even I, a humble retired scientist and not an expert in the field, predicted it might be. I have also further predicted (based on a hunch) that mixing vaccines will turn out to be highly effective and without risk.

Add to that the simple maths. 1 jab gives you around 70% and the second another 25% (ish) would inform you that its better to protect 100% of your vulnerable to 70% than 50% of your vulnerable to 95% (leaving 50% with no protection at all). Bang for bucks.

Simply passing on the information that SAGE think that the traffic light "policy" is a pile of poo. This will be ignored by government as per.

Of course it is inevitable that variants will wash up on our shores. However that's no reason to make it easier to import them. Especially "Variants Of Concern" like the one from South Africa. Which is why their UK progress is tracked:

What an utterly fatuous observation.

Is it not also inevitable that home grown variants will emerge?  I get the desire to stop the introduction of new variants which may be more virulent or vax resistant, but that does not mean the risk would be totally eradicated, does it?

So what do you suggest instead?  The whole UK just close its borders in case something might happen in the future?

It is about managing risk and taking reasonable precautions.  Stopping travel isn't reasonable.

So, given Covid is circulating at quite the rate across pretty much every country on the planet & new variants are mutating all the time, at what point or number in terms of % new infections per country (you like numbers), would it be acceptable for Boris to open the U.K. borders up to foreign travel?

Or, should we never go anywhere ever again?

Sadly I’m going to have to file you in the ‘under stairs cupboard shitting his kegs’ brigade with four or five others here.

Count yourself lucky you’re not in the ‘work shy Loose Women Government teat sucklers’ squad.
