Like they've nothing better to do to fill their days than pander to his "mission" or whatever it was... He wouldn't have been on his own. Watterson's little camo-jaunts will have been part of something called the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, which was originally for MPs but members of other British legislatures can also get involved in. Allegedly "Its aim is to improve the quality of debate on military issues by exposing its members to first-hand experience of the service". Of course the 'experience' is highly selective (they'd be better off talking to a bunch of squaddies in a pub for info) and the main purpose is to provide photo opportunities for the politicians while the military get a bunch of willing patsies who will push for more and more spending (the whole thing is paid for by defence companies). 2

I am not talking about people who can deploy sandbags, but people who can assess and devise an emergency response plan. That is a specialised skill, but it is often a skill derived from military planning. Completely agree. In the past the IOM has used this Easingwold Emergency Planning College to train Senior Civil Servants Managers and to develop Emergency Action Plans to deploy in the event of a disaster event on the island. The Hospital used to have it's own Major Accident (Majax) plan but maybe it still has. Frank Inman was a keen supporter iirc. https://www.epcresilience.com The training was top notch when I went with a few colleagues several years ago.
snowman
Can we stick to the topic of removing restrictions? 1

How on earth did he manage to blag his way onto that particular jolly? However that would explain the strange looking "portcullis" badge on the beret worn like like a cast member from 'Allo 'Allo! But really, what kind of debates on "military issues" is Watterson ever going to have? Except with his bedroom mirror. Perhaps... Maybe if he spent the same amount of time on what he could do for his constutuents rather than himself things would improve.

Maybe to cover every eventuality we should restrict Spewing Juan from imitating a member of the armed forces too. Gladys
It seems to me that a good national emergency response plan would inform decisions on restrictions, so it is highly relevant. However, gratuitous photos of young Spewin' are, I agree, not relevant.

My wife went to Easingwold and wrote the first version of Noble’s Majax plan. Seem to remember it was like herding cats trying to get everyone to agree, but at least it was a starting point to have V.1 on paper. Thanks for that (despite getting a shudder when their website announced they were owned by the Cabinet Office!). There probably are departmental emergency plans, but it would seem not an overarching plan to respond to a national emergency. trmpton
Pretty sure if someone forward thinking contacted various bands and stand up comedians they would be well up for coming here over the next few weeks and performing to a packed Villa. Great pr, money in for Villa, and generally a good thing for all concerned. Obviously would be short notice in terms of production but I bet stand ups in particular are desperate to get back into a packed theatre

trmpton
I would think so. Decent comedy always sells out over here. To such an extent that I haven't been to any for years because you have to book a year or more in advance and my life just isn't such that I am planning that far in advance. TheTeapot
How much money do you think a stand up comedian would want to get paid for a show in the gaiety?
