Israel has been a great real world example for reopening. Now it seems they're on the verge of another lockdown

Isreal who famously led the vaccine race and took all the plaudits, and then hit a brick wall before reaching the levels required to offer real protection?

No idea if that was lack of take up or lack of doses. But we are in a much better position than they are.

Why do some coronaviruses cause the common cold, yet another has caused a worldwide shutdown? I’ve thought for a while that covid-19 will in time become another common cold, once we have herd immunity.  In the link, perhaps that’s what happened with the “Russian Flu” pandemic in 1889-90.  This virus can still be bad if you’re frail, immunocompromised, or on chemotherapy, but most people take a day or two off work and otherwise get on with it.  No enforced isolation or testing.

Is that where covid is heading? Are we nearly there yet?

You immune system, vaccine, overall protection levels in the community will conspire to keep you  safe.  Never mind that the Islands health services and sanitation levels are way ahead of most of the rest of the world and what they were 20 years ago etc etc.

You greatly underestimate the power of bacon.

Just to clarify, you do accept that Covid is at least an additional risk? what we are debating here is the level of acceptable risk and whether that risk should be managed. I understand you think it’s a risk worth taking and that we shouldn’t have any restrictions in place, that’s absolutely fine as that’s your stance, but then your posts seem to turn more towards denial and more towards Covid is all a con, no worse than flu, blah blah.

You will never convince me that no restrictions was the best approach, not until the scientific evidence is there to back it up and that is long time away.

Unfortunately we just don’t know, the most common theories are it will either burn itself out naturally with the help of vaccines/immunity or that a vaccine resistant strain will start the process all over again, hopefully it’s the former.

All I would say to that is that while we have seen scenario 1 happen before, have we seen scenario 2?

JERSEY

Death of hospital patient with Covid-19

18 July 2021

covid update

A patient who had tested positive for COVID-19 has died at Jersey General Hospital. The patient was an adult under 50 years of age and not classed as clinically vulnerable. Their next of kin are being supported at this time.

The Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Richard Renouf, said: “I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. It is incredibly sad to lose a loved one and I am sure that we all will feel sympathy for their loss.

“Health and Community Services will not be releasing any further information at this time in order to protect the privacy of the deceased and their family.”

There are currently 12 patients in the General Hospital who have COVID, with half having been fully-vaccinated. Eight were admitted due to COVID, with the remainder admitted for other reasons and found to be positive for COVID when tested as part of admission screening. Two people are currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

Dr Ivan Muscat, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, said: “I must emphasise the importance of being vaccinated to be protected against COVID. A person who has not been vaccinated is 25 times more likely to be hospitalised than a vaccinated individual

95 new cases; and 2 in hospital

The dashboard is all over the place - yesterdays active  case total was 465 and today it is 698. So 233 new cases in last 24 hours.  Clearly several tranches coming in during the 24 period.

Those that have been vaccinated in Israel were vaccinated with pfizer which is quite effective against the delta variant; most people on the Island were vaccinated with AZ which is not. This is not going to go the way CoMin think it is.

The vaccine is having no effect on new cases in Israel!

JERSEY

Death of hospital patient with Covid-19

That’s the same Jersey that still has mandatory mask wearing on public transport and restrictions on gatherings of 20 or more so by the logic I’ve seen on here people will say it clearly doesn’t work and we’re right to have no restrictions as people are dying anyway 🤷
