  • 'Targeted measures now' - PM
  • Day two PCR tests are back for all international travellers - "We will require anyone who enters the UK to take a PCR test by the end of the second day after their arrival and to self-isolate until they have a negative result."
  • All close contacts of positive Omicron case must self isolate for 10 days regardless of jab status
  • Ramping up of mask wearing in shops and indoor settings
  • 'Boost the booster campaign' - health sec asking JCVI to consider giving boosters to more people and reducing gap from second dose

  • Assume we will follow above rules, Alf will be calling a Comin conference!

Back to mask wearing etc. Also looking at reducing the length of time between second vaccination and booster, and also bringing more age groups into the program. I think our booster rollout hasn’t been as successful, hence the missed appointments. Also too few surgeries allowed to administer Covid vaccination.

Plus PCR testing day 2 for all international arrivals so we’ll have to follow suit on that , plus mandatory face masks in shops & public transport

As the SA Government has now said what is the point of any country spending money sequencing all this stuff if the first thing the rest of the world is going to do is crap their pants and punish them and their citizens in the absence of any other facts emerging and with the WHO saying it would take a few weeks to understand the impact of the new variant as scientists work to determine how transmissible it actually is:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-59442129

That is quite clearly the sort of reaction that one would expect from SA politicians and economists and not logic and science.

"Punish"? How? By imposing necessary restrictions? SA scientists have done the correct thing. They have identified a new, virulent, resistant strain within their locality and warned the world. They had a responsibility to do that. The virus is spread via travelling public and the measures now being imposed recognise that and the known facts. Hopefully lessons have been learned from the last identified debacle.

The alternative is that they kept schtum and allowed SA international travel to potentially infect the world on the qt., in which case the fallout, including economic, has potential to be far more damaging, not only to themselves but globally.

New and (claimed but not proven) virulent strain in a population that has a general vaccination rate of 24% and a general HIV infection rate of 10%. Literally nothing is proven at all and yet the panic has already started.

Theres already a few literally crying on Facebook that in the 45 minutes since the UK announcement there has been no briefing by Alf Cannan.

I would think he will have to do a briefing next week to confirm if restrictions UK are bringing in will apply here particularly for anyone traveling outside UK it’s now isolating until negative day 2 Pcr so 3 days

Something like 40% of South Africans had antibodies at the end of the first wave last year. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-09-14-covid-19-may-have-already-infected-20-million-in-south-africa-says-prof-madhi/

Estimates put the total number of South Africans who have had it in the region now of 70-80%.

You’d expect some level of community/herd immunity as a result.

Is this just international travel? I’m assuming as we’re in the common travel area the day 2 testing will not apply? Got a long weekend booked and will be really pissed off if we spend all that money just to be stuck for 4 days.

I’m about to find out 😕

And CoMin.

Edge and Hooper were two of the biggest critics of the last Government’s COVID handling.

Be interesting to see what happens now.
