I'm not surprised. I heard it and thought WTF?? It was like his script had been written by a member of the Doomsday Cult. Completely inaccurate, unscientific and sent out the wrong message at the wrong time.

See, i didn't even notice him say it at the time. It's definitely been siezed upon by the doomdeniers though, to quite a widespread level judging by the comments, mainly consisting of "who is that guy?"

He's opening himself up to some serious ridicule then if the clip is now going viral. I'm not on Twitter but I imagine it can be quite an unforgiving place when you are the butt of a joke that is flying round the world in cyberspace.

It is what it is, I’m sure these people work together in the week, so really I think companies who have booked food could have it sent to their offices instead. So businesses are not out of pocket. It weren’t so long ago Sunday roasts and take always were delivered at home, I can’t see the difference being sent to the work place.

Boris in UK & Alex Allinson today we’re saying there’s no reason to cancel Xmas events so why are they ?

Just when you thought we had an upgrade on Howard Quayle he goes and let's some idiot write his script and go and blow it so soon into his tenure.

Still it does seem to confirm what many said about him on here before he got appointed, that he was a little too Tim 'nice but dim' to be an effective leader.

Wtf? I have been in small shops and people weren’t bothering or being asked.

People aren’t nothing in the offices I have been to either.

I can accept those of you who have been in packed shops have seen them today, not sure why you can’t accept other people factual version of events.

It will be interesting to see what the uptake at schools has been?  I am guessing pretty low amongst students.

I've been in numerous meetings in two large offices today (200+staff) not a mask in sight. Walked into the Spar with two customers in and was publicly shamed by the manager for not wearing a mask :D

Really.  You don’t think the venues would take a HUGE hit on the bar bill, which is where a big chunk, if not the majority, of their margin comes from

I don't think its to get out of paying for parties, I think for some of the bigger organisations they are worried of the bad press if one of them turned into a superspreader event. I know my partners do was canned because they were worried about the risk of the majority of the company in a single place where at the moment they have a balance of WFH and in the office with regular LFD and good ventilation.

It's not how I would have phrased it[1], but it isn't actually untrue is it?

There is still much we do not know about the omicron variant, the most crucial is that question about how effective the vaccine will be in offering us protection.  The greatest concern is that the virus has mutated to such an extent that our immune systems, trained by the vaccine, no longer recognise the virus and no longer trigger an immune response.  This sort of variant is know as a ‘vaccine escape’ variant.

The large number of mutations in Omicron have caused a lots of concern and the previous SA-originated variant (Beta) did show some reduction in vaccine protection.  Omicron does seem more transmissible from the limited amount of data we have.

[1]  I would have talked more about a reduction in protection rather than the immune response not being triggered at all - which implies it's more an on/off thing, while we know that vaccination doesn't provide complete protection against existing variants even.

That is exactly the issue, I would have thought.  Just like government, no employer is going to put themselves in the position of saying 'it'll be reet', to have it quoted back at them when numerous employees contract it.
