Whether or not other viral epidemics have run their course, it’s nothing to do with dashboards. It’s to do with other factors, such as medical science and social factors like lifestyle, housing, socialising and even the presence of vulnerable groups, who, in previous times would not have been around. Your lack of understanding about the different types of virus causing “seasonal” flu, and a coronavirus is staggering. The difference between flu and COVID-19 is in their causative agents. Flu viruses belong to a virus family known as Orthomyxoviridae. COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2, which is in the virus family Coronaviridae. Both families consist of RNA viruses, but they differ with regard to the protein layer that encapsulates the RNA. More specifically, flu viruses express two surface antigens (foreign proteins)—hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N)—which trigger an immune response. The exact form of these antigens changes every now and then, resulting in the periodic emergence of new, more virulent influenza viruses with the potential to cause a pandemic. The surface of SARS-CoV-2 does not have these antigens. Rather, similar to other types of coronaviruses, like the common cold, its outer surface is studded with glycoprotein spikes, which give such viruses a crownlike, or coronal, appearance. Spike glycoproteins are responsible for triggering the immune response, and they carry out the critical function of enabling the coronavirus particle to enter cells, where it then replicates. It's still going to become endemic and then seasonal.
AcousticallyChallenged
I think the advice from 1918 is interesting. Especially 'Do not disregard the advice of a specialist, just because you do not understand' and 'Do not disregard the rights of a community'. 1
Gladys
I kind of get the point JB is making; the constant reporting is keeping Covid uppermost in everyone's mind. Whereas there will come a point that the reporting is doing nothing but feed a fascination with it rather than assist in public health. Whether we are at that point is another question. 3

Other viruses haven’t, and it was only the advent of vaccines that stopped them. Theres no reason to believe it’ll become seasonal. However all viruses affecting the respiratory tract are likely to more prevalent in damp and cold when we spend more time indoors.

Ramseyboi
Remember the other day when people said COVID was causing cancellations at the hospital I suggested it might actually be a shortage of anaesthetists https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/four-anaesthetists-from-nobles-hospital-facing-manslaughter-charge/?fbclid=IwAR2KBZFhrL0br_2bqltJIV0PBCXe-O6W3zaBfRuNBCSr-vNLoun7GH8aSCo

As much as you are correct, I predict that by this time next week, our daily new cases will have halved. Maybe even dropped to the teens. Similar in uk. Simply because students and many workers are not doing LFTs. Also, look at the Independent or most other daily news papers about omicron and the symptoms. They have changed. It is now fatigue, headache, runny nose, sore throat and cough / sneeze. Same as a cold? In fact, experts are now saying if you have cold symptoms get a test, it may be omicron! That is scaremongering. Covid-19 has now mutated into a common cold. It is over!

That may be correct. Our number of live cases has almost halved in the last week. UK numbers are through the roof, highest ever, but that’s because there is much more testing than in 2020, amongst other things. Our rate per 100,000 is still higher than UK, even after halving. I reckon the peak will be mid January.
