Much as I’d prefer to stay out of this thread this announcement today piqued my interest. So we’ve all accepted the restrictions and impacts of the last two years in order to protect the NHS and yet our NHS workers are now threatening to go on strike on us? So who was protecting who?

One of the few sectors where staff haven’t taken a financial hit through this nightmare and now they, who have had regular and secure income throughout and even overtime when others have been struggling to keep a roof over their head or a business afloat want to strike over a pay rise.

Zero support from me I am afraid.

I am only being that polite because it is Christmas.  They and the teachers need to look at the bigger picture ffs

I don’t think staff want, or are threatening, to strike. That’s just the usual Union rhetoric. What staff do want is a comparable deal with the UK - either a 3 or 4% rise. The current offer, given the inflation rate, is an effective pay cut.

Health Care Assistants are on about £10 an hour. Given the difficulty of the job, is it any surprise that recruitment and retention are challenging, when much more comfortable jobs are available in TK Maxx, for example.

I understand how it might not seem right when businesses are struggling and others are worried about having to pay the rent, but it’s not an either/or situation.  Health workers here, particularly the lower paid, deserve a rise comparable with the UK.  As one of the higher paid I could do without, and would accept that if it meant proper rises lower down the scale.  There’s not many that think like that however, and in the socialist system that is the NHS we all get the same, as a percentage, generally.

I agree with Wrighty (above) it’s the Unions undermining the workers case really with badly thought out rhetoric. Its poor tactics as I think it will solicit the sort of response you gave from a lot of people. If they go on strike then basically the last 2 years of protecting the NHS has been a total waste of everyone’s time as we won’t have an NHS.

As the cost of living is higher on the island surely chaining themselves to the UK rates is a negative move...?

There's a recruitment crisis

That’s private sector care too though where pay isn’t much better. Governments are walking a tricky line on all this now which I think explains Alf Cannans recent change of tone. If they aren’t careful NHS workers will end up thinking they’ve been conned, and businesses and employees who have suffered a lot will end up thinking they’ve been conned too. And therefore everyone will end up thinking they’ve been conned by what have been wartime like propaganda exercises to solicit public compliance.

Solicit public compliance to what end...?
