Latest news says we are on the up

Doesn't say how many of the 18 in hospital are there with COVID or there because of COVID

Rumour mill says 4

You don't need the rumour mill, it's actually in the latest report:

At the time of information provision (10:00 21/06/22), there are 18 patients currently in Nobles Hospital who have tested positive for COVID-19.

4 were admitted for treatment of their COVID-19 infection and 14 were admitted for other reasons.

The figures last week were 7 and 1.  As you can see the figures are only two days out of date.

Of course even those who aren't admitted for Covid will be an extra burden on the hospital because of the need for separate treatment and the way it may worsen the patients' existing condition in some cases or prolong their stay.

Morning Simon, I’d better not come round this morning, went down with a real nasty bug yesterday, high temperature, shivering and shaking, aching in all my joints, couldn’t eat anything.

He, 67 years old has COVID. Fully jabbed and boosted.

Anyone  can say they have had a positive covid test and click the button. You don’t invite over 30 thousand people with no test if it is that bad.

Utter hogwash. LOL.

So, 4 in hospital being treated for Covid. This with nearly 2,000 infections being recorded per week, and probably as many if not more going undetected. In fact, if you use the ratio people in hospital with Covid, only 4/18 actually knew they had it (assuming that those being treated for other ailments were only discovered to be positive for Covid on admission). So, transposing that ratio to the general population, the number of infections on island at the moment is probably nearly 8,000 per week.

4 hospitalisations per 8,000 cases. No need to open the bunker just yet.

Stop giving free LFT’s. And ban the use of them.

Stopped giving them out on demand in Uk except to certain sectors like health care, it would soon cut numbers if people had to pay for tests!

According to data shared by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday: "...3-fold reductions of neutralizing antibody titers induced by vaccination and infection against BA4 and BA5 compared with BA1 and BA2, which are already substantially lower than the original COVID-19 variants i.e. the neutralizing antibody levels were lower by a factor of 6.4 against BA.1; by a factor of 7 against BA.2; by a factor of 14.1 against BA.2.12.1 and by a factor of 21 against BA.4 or BA.5".

"BA.4 and BA.5 are the fastest spreading variants reported to date, and they are expected to dominate Covid-19 transmission in the United States, United Kingdom and the rest of Europe within the next few weeks, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control".

Far too soon to pop a Champagne cork yet, IMHO.

It's actually admitted for Covid, so some of the others may be being treated as well - it's just that they were admitted for something else.  It's usually about a week between symptoms and hospital admission if needed[1], so really these hospital numbers should be compared to last week's infections.

No need for panic as yet, but hospitalisation and possibly deaths won't have peaked yet from this and there needs to be careful monitoring.  There's a hint that figures may be dropping in the last few days reported, but it's too early to tell if it's a trend and as I say it won't stop hospitalisation rising.

[1]  The most recent data I could find are here, pre-Omicron, and it may be that this has changed.  Interestingly the delay seem largest with older (and so more vulnerable) patients.
