What is going to happen then if the vaccine does not work as well as a naturally occurring infection as concerns bestowing a robust and lasting immunity?

We know that there have only been a limited number of reinfections among 40 million cases (circa dozen). Thus, a naturally occurring infection does bring sterilising immunity, at the least for some time (measured in years).

None of the vaccines current in the pipeline is expected to bestow sterilising immunity.

It is possible for a vaccine to deliver better immunity than a naturally occurring infection. There are a few vaccines that are so good. However, it is very hard for a respiratory illness and not expected in the near or medium term as concern Covid-19.

That is is unfortunately “the science”. The Guardian will say that that is neoliberal science and thus to be banned. But the socialists will have a very hard time changing reality.

And that reality check will become apparent next month when the first data about phase III trials of the most advanced vaccines will be made public.

Exactly but it seems that any debate (which is all it is) around possible border relaxations is met with complete hysteria from people who seem to not want the subject to even be discussed. As you say we’re now in a corner with no exit plan and along the way more and more people have been brain washed into thinking that keeping the world out is a viable long-term solution when it isn’t.

The missus got me to have a gander at facebook last night, thankfully I'm not on it but my sneak peek just confirmed why.

It's like large portions of the island's population have had a frontal lobotomy, crying for borders to be closed indefinitely otherwise we're all going to hell and shouting down anyone with a reasoned argument. The herd mentality is reaching fever pitch and you can see why our politicians are like rabbits in the headlights, as it's these idiots who will be clogging up their Inboxes. Even chatting to normally reasoned people in shops you get the same level of hysteria.

It's only on here you actually get intelligent people willing to have a rational debate on it. I despair as to how this place moves forward, especially with someone like Skelly navigating our way out of the economic shitstorm we'll be in if this goes on into next year.

As soon as any case is reported , Facebook goes mental with the shut the borders mob shouting everyone down, give the students money at Xmas & ban them from returning home is the latest theme.

Now Howie has banned 7 days testing the cases will miraculously disappear and the Covid Mary’s will be happy for a while.

The Chairman of the UK Vaccine taskforce recently said any vaccine will only likely be up to 50% effective

There is no magic bullet. Life must go on.

Sadly it’s getting to the point that you can’t avoid it. Last week within about 25 minutes of the news at Zurich getting out it was full blown social media hysteria. There really is no need and actually it’s damaging. There’s a few Facebook sites that should be warned about content as they’re just nut job magnets and the second something changes their pages are just full of headless mongs barking at the moon trying to spread as much fear and hysteria as they possibly can. It’s hard to see how we can ever get out of this crazy corner the IOM has been painted into and it’s inhibiting far too many political decisions (ie, students potentially returning etc). When people actually go online in their hundreds supporting people being jailed for buying petrol or a sandwich and literally baying for blood by way of more prison sentences you understand exactly how the Nazis managed to get the people behind them by spreading a similar version of fear and ignorance across the masses.

I think the moment we jailed the first Covid violator was the point I knew this Island was properly fucked.

Dark ages stuff.

Newspapers at weekend full of reports that to be more effective the test  system needs for the telephone app to be linked to both tracking and  services, but the risk of people not complying or avoiding is too high, unless it can be tied to their own benefit by being allowed to  do things denied to those who don't comply......

There was also a piece in the Sunday times about Hancock and Harding and how badly it is looking for them. Knives apparently being sharpened.
