Nothing against Mr Moorhouse and Ms Sharpe but this should surely be the most highly focused committee of Tynwald?

Illustrates that few Tynwald members other than perhaps Mr Shimmins have any major large enterprise or economic experience

It’s interesting that a lot of those comments mirror what a lot have said above. Also published today were the latest unemployment statistics which show over 1,100 people are still unemployed in the wake of Covid. Do they really think they have a mandate to put private sector logistics workers on the dole when unemployment is the highest it’s been here for 25 years? Government should be protecting private sector workers jobs not making them even more insecure.

This is the sort of terms Hermes offer staff

Hermes, which has been criticised for its treatment of casual workers in the past, also said that all new self-employed hires would get holiday pay. It follows a deal with the GMB union last year.

However, the union has criticised the firm for its policy of only paying self-isolating couriers £20 a day - and only if they typically earn less than £90 a day.

On the other hand, I wonder how many consumers care what the GMB union thinks about anything. I know that I don't.

In my neck of the woods Hermes are very very good. Most people in our vilage tip delivery drivers a few bob because we know that the pay rate is low in all cases.

With covid and isolation usually a couple of quid in an envelope works fine. We keep a few "loaded envelopes" ready in the draw of the hall table.

Do you guys on the island do something similar for people making deliveries to your homes?

Just curious.

I always think a “ thank you very much” is sufficient. I often tip delivery drivers who are helpful and polite though, especially when delivering heavy items. I know that is not an easy job.

Cook normally invites them in to eat with the servants at the kitchen table. And the chance to warm themselves by the fire.

Hermes are recruiting 10,500 new workers in the UK as a direct result of Covid.

But clearly not wanted in the IOM.

“The company said it was expecting a near-doubling of parcel volumes in the looming Christmas season - around 3.5 million a day - despite what is expected to be a tough time for family budgets given the scale of the shock to the economy.”

All that’s being compared here is a dead 1970s pre free markets business model against a current 21st century business model.

Or in other words comparing socialism to capitalism. Someone said that the government can't run anything. What is sinister is when they do run a business but also wield the power to compel everyone to use it by barring the market to others.

If it's strategic it makes sense.
