If anything, the apology through gritted teeth is more satisfying because it shows they knew they were wrong. Not sure that I entirely agree with U, Glad, about knowing they were wrong. It is like a kid who nicks his brother's sweets, and Mom forces him to apologise. So he grudgingly says "SOR-REE"!, but doesn't really mean it. Woodward has been vociferous in demanding an apology - so Ashie, with an eye on the elections in September, has issued a grudging one.

In their nature, it's an admission of failure that comes as an absolute last resort after all other measures of spin and denial have failed. They clearly expected that the report would be much vaguer and spread the blame around more. But the geniuses at the Cabinet Office clearly hadn't even sorted out the one thing they are supposed to be good at - paperwork. So there was only one place for the finger to point. The only thing you can say in Ashford's defence is that it really shouldn't be him apologising at all. The Minister in charge of the Cabinet Office is Quayle and all the faults came from there and the Attorney General's Office. But then it seems to easier to apologise for things you aren't responsible for.

littlebushy
It was a personal apology. He clearly stated that he couldn't speak on behalf of anybody else (that's a first). So I'm not entirely sure what he has apologised for!

Maybe he is apologising in the hope that it will go away and not, imo, because he is actually sorry.

ubbiali
If we can1t tell what/for whom/why he is apologising, what chance have we got of understanding the rest of the twaddle to which we may or may not have been subjected to over the last few months? Grumble
I see Dr G is now tweeting that Paul Moulton's new channel is effectively paid-for Government propoganda, but without the (sorry) health warning about not being impartial.

He makes a mistake and apologizes for it. But that can’t be right can it?. His apology is worth nothing because he is a politician and they apparently are incapable of contrition. It is not like they are human or anything is it? Perhaps he should apologize for his apology not being the right sort of apology? Its the old “when did you stop beating your wife” sort of thing. Its a good job the wider Manx public are a bit more savvy than his critics on here.
