Spat between Chief Minister and Dr Glover

On the back of seeing his interview with Mark O'Connor (standing in for Paul Moulton) on Youtube and the incorrect information stated about this "we buy reagents from multiple companies" lark, I sent the minister the correct information by email. He's yet to reply.

We also increased the price of the testing reagents to commercial prices on the basis that they're using the reagents for private testing.

I cant actually believe that Ashfort said the below, taken from the Examiner. I'm speechless.

’We are fighting this pandemic on various fronts and doing our utmost to maximise use of resources. The price at which the product is sold doesn’t, as far as I know, have any contractual limitations on purpose of use.’

Contractually no but morally yes, you fool.

I took it to mean that he is happy to have his department profit from the goodwill of the person and company who brought him on-Island testing. True colours indeed.

But Mr Ashford told the Examiner: ’Reagents are purchased from a number of companies, and once purchased we consider carefully how and where to use it, based on need, demand and where it will bring benefit to our people.

’We are fighting this pandemic on various fronts and doing our utmost to maximise use of resources. The price at which the product is sold doesn’t, as far as I know, have any contractual limitations on purpose of use.’

He pointed out that the £50 charge is the same as that which was previously in place for seven-day testing for returning residents, and the price is set at the costs involved of conducting and processing the test - it does not generate a profit for the department.

Contractually no but morally yes, you fool.

Why would you even say this? What a prick.

That'll teach 'em!

Not.

What I cannot understand is Ashford's ducking and diving on this issue. Is he being deliberately fallacious? There seems to be some desperate campaign going on against you and I can only imagine it to be some deliberate face-saving effort because you're stealing their fucking lime-light!

I would say much stronger things with far more personal opinions and well chosen insults but you all know who I am and this is an open forum.

Well, you've opened the book with that post. As I've said before, print and be damned. You've nothing to fear or lose by unveiling the circumstances. If this administration's adopting a risky criterion you should say so. You have the credentials after all.

The current status of negotiations with the DHSC to continue the involvement of myself and my company in on-Island testing would be 100% described as "delicate". Right now, today, the on-Island testing is 100% reliant on my company's equipment and reagents. This kind of publicity stunt on the part of Ashford could kill on-Island testing and from my email yesterday HE KNOWS IT.

Dr Glover, I'm actually rather disappointed that you didn't post it to his home address and request it be read out in this weeks briefing.

Here are the tests available to them:

  • The multiplex test designed and supplied by my company. It contains the human swabbing test and two separate tests for the virus.
  • The "back-up" test called VIAsure, which the current genomics shows wouldn't detect around 40% of cases. There also isn't anyone at the DHSC trained to interpret the results (I did that). If the biomedical scientists tried to interpret the results on their own they'd be putting their state registrations at risk, so this test is not being used.
  • The "rapid tests". These are the £120 tests which are severely rationed world-wide. Before I left the DHSC these were rationed to 16 per day and reserved for the sickest patients and most urgent testing (ITU, transfers to the UK, emergency surgery).

All the current patient testing that isn't super urgent and needing the rapid tests are run on my company's test.

Ashies comments leave me very concerned regarding vaccine roll out & borders policy as he hasn’t got a clue!

My gut feeling is without lot reassurance UK NHS will not provide for use here a 975 dose batch of vaccine signed off today which needs to be stored at -70C. As with genetic testing the protocol around this, will required specialist equipment and training. Bull semen is stored at similar temperatures within canisters of liquid nitrogen, which a friend who had a farm said he used to store, but transportation was a completely different matter. Also regulation around getting cow pregnant and vaccination care home residents before let crowds visit will naturally be very different. As with testing I think unlikely IoM has a medical specialist experienced in this area.

Just wait until they find out how shitty it is to get anything to the Isle of Man on dry ice (-80). We order this kind of thing regularly and it's a pain in the rear. I'm hopeful that the vaccine deliveries might sort out the shit-show that is super-cold-chain to the Isle of Man as everything has to come by ferry and it's at least 48-72 hours with significant defrost in that time.
