Presumably facilities such as this would have to be purpose built. If it was decided we didn't want such a facility, all government would have to do is insist DoI was in charge of construction.

Another nomination for post of the year.

Googled how long does it take to process Asylum seekers. From UK gov site answer

You'll usually get a decision on your application within 6 months. You can get up to 2 years in prison or have to leave the UK if you give false information on your application.

remember lots arrive as immigrants then go down the Asylum route. Which can take years after legals get involved .

The UK Home Secretary is said to be considering the IOM as one of a number of places that immigrants to the UK will be sent for processing - this according to the Times newspaper.  We did host many of the UK's  internees during WW2, so a precedent of sorts does exist perhaps.

Thinking of big boats, there are a lot of old cruise ships queuing up to go to the breakers at the moment. They would make good detention centres, and could be anchored in all sorts of undesirable places.

what has Peel done to deserve that?

Don't know about you, but I fail to be comforted by her statement

It's backed up by her long and distinguished Tynwald career....
