So, they're going to pump it from Laxey to Garwick.  Treat it and then send it back to Laxey.

I appreciate that the effluent should be much cleaner and releasing it into the bay once treated will be better than currently, but this doesn't sound like the most efficient plan.  There is an outflow at Garwick already.

Unfortunate, but alas there is not much that can be done regarding what I would assume would be someone dumping some sort of poisonous substance down a drain.

However, today's Examiner leading with the headline of the DOI (yeah them again) dumping toxic sludge from Peel Harbour against expert advice (again).

Oh how we look after and nurture our Biosphere... (and experts)

"Toxic" only because it was allowed to build up by lack of dredging and maintenance so it became concentrated.

Naturally it would have ended up at sea anyway, and surely dumping at out at sea dilutes the concentration sufficiently???

Should change the regs in our waters to account for Island's specific geology then regularly dredge and dump in the sea at area of least impact.

By far cheapest and most effective way to deal with it, rather than the nonsense of dredging, drying it out,  then landfilling.

Undoubtedly.  Makes you wonder if this problem was ever theorised in the proposals and plans.

Nonetheless, it ended up with the West Coast Scallop fishery near where they dumped it, being closed for the winter of 14/15 due to the high levels of toxins found.

The diluting effect of the sea is the same whether you dribble it in all the time or whether to put it in in one go. What important is the gross amount you put into the sea.

I understand that if it was dribbled in all the time no one would probably even notice and also we now have stored up a bigger problem

But really its not good to put toxic metals and PCBs in the sea full stop.

Whoops.. Why would they dump it near a scallop fishery?? there must be other deeper/less sensitive places in our territorial waters.

It will go through. Luckily this time they have a Chairman of Manx Utilities who himself generates more shit than the combined populations of Peel and Garff.
