teapot
Is that right that the Steam Packet is about to be sold? Anyone know anything?
BigDave
Was on the radio this morning that it had attracted several offers and that it could go to auction. I think they said this was from something published in The Times, but it sounds like it was a prediction rather than a press release.
slinkydevil
Source - Manx Radio website: "The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is reported to be up for sale. The Sunday Times suggested yesterday that current owners, Montague Private Equity, are looking at approaches for the company. They bought it as an investment several years ago from SeaContainers, the company owned by Jim Sherwood. The management was retained and the company has continued much as before. An Australian Bank, which recently snapped up the Isle of Wight Ferry business, Wightlink, are believed to be in the running. The Steam Packet is this year celebrating 175 years of service." The Old Git
I think I heard the claim that it's the oldest continously trading company in the world on the round the island trip
MasterChief
Yeah apparently the steam packet is the oldest passenger ferry service in the world. Personally I wouldn't mind the company being sold on to someone else as long as they sorted out the terrible scheduling of many of the crossings - particularly those to Ireland. The times of the boat are terrible as are the dates. To go to Dublin for the weekend you have to go late Friday and return midday Sunday from Belfast. For the supposed peak of the season that's some really crap scheduling.
