A guy I know over here on 'business'.

Had easy tonight and City tomorrow AM both booked and zero confidence in either of them actually going to get back home. Silly world.

And add on the fact that the rendezvous lounge at the airport is closed for most of the day ( if it ever opens!!)

When I last checked the opening time was 10 AM To 5 PM on weekdays  and clients have reported it as closed even during these times

I know it's run by another company but this  doesn't help business visitors who want some work done while they wait..

We have an airport that closes before most 12 year olds go to bed. It’s not really easyjet’s fault.

It's probably not easyJet's fault as much as some are claiming, because the accumulated delay through the day that is causing the evening flight to run late is caused by other airports unable to cope with even the reduced levels of current usage.  Heathrow for example has capped passenger departures at 100,000 per day, though it dealt with 110-125,000 in 2019.

But there's no way that IOM Airport can extend hours any more than at the moment for a reason already pointed out - it can only be done by moving to a three-shift pattern, when we don't even have enough people to cover two, never mind three.  And that would apply not just to ATC, but everyone else needed to keep the Airport open.

Yes but surely EasyJet could find a plane schedule that has them arriving in the Isle of Man at around 7.30pm or 8pm so if there are delays they can be more easily accommodated . They manage to do it in the winter .

Do you think they build their schedule anywhere else in the UK or Europe around whether an airport feels like it wants to be open or not?

Exactly the other main benefactor is the SPC who must be getting record bookings from people who actually want to get to where they’re going. It seems like our CS has worked out that being shit has a multiplier effect.

The prices on the Racket would seem to indicate they agree.

That is a really stupid comment.

Of course they have to take into account the published opening hours of all the airports they serve. There will be dozens of airports across their network that have a published closing time, whether it is due to noise abatement, lack of traffic or whatever.  Maybe 9.15pm is earlier than some other airports close, but they have to build their schedule accordingly.

easyJet have around 70 aircraft based at Gatwick, and it is inconceivable that if the will was there, they couldn't do what @IOMsuggested and get their evening flight here around 8.00pm, as it does in the Winter. Also, as has been mentioned before, this is not a new problem. They have struggled to run the evening flight on time for years, and have chosen to do nothing about it. The impact this year has been exacerbated by the problems in the wider industry and the ATC issues at Ronaldsway.

They will divert their planes where they can make the most money, not who kicks up the most fuss.

The trouble is that EasyJet have scheduled their flight to the IOM at the end of their day's rotation, knowing that Ronaldsway has limitations, and knowing that the airline is susceptible to delays, and delays upon delays.

They rely on the fact that the IOM airport crew are willing to help where possible, even though it inevitably means that the staff on the evening shift will rarely get home at anything like a "normal" time.

Quote from the Manx Radio article - "The department also confirmed that during May and June the airport extended its opening hours beyond the agreed 9.30pm seasonal extension, for the London Gatwick service, on 48 out of 61 days."

And then they are unable to cope when, unusually, the airport needs to shut at its advertised time because there is a staff shortage, and they are blaming the airport.

1. No it isn’t

2. It’s our choice to close the airport at 9PM and if that doesn’t fit in with a major European carrier like EJ then it’s tough shit really. You can’t expect a major carrier to build its schedule around a provincial low volume airport where everyone wants to tucked up in bed by 9:15.

Not exactly tucked up in bed....
Even if the 2130 extension were met on every occasion that means a shift finish at 2130, a drive home, an unwind and hopefully a good sleep before rinse and repeat. Arriving home at 2200 from a stressful job does actually make that process quite difficult OM, it would be interesting to know if you have tried it. A finish at 2300 is considerably worse.

And do you seriously want those carrying out a vital safety function working beyond the point of fatigue on a regular basis?

Frankly every report or comment I read on the Airport (or promenade) now, leaves my jaw on the floor and my head in my hands.

That figure is especially shocking however.  So basically your 'late' EZ flight to/from Gatwick is going to be delayed 80% of the time.

I'm flying to/from Gatwick in a month.  I've already started looking at the train times from London to Liverpool.  It's actually remarkably quick!

I'm already concerned that Ronaldsway seems to now be routinely operating with less than the required number of ATC staff - surely that's a safety risk in itself?

(not a dig at the ATC staff).
