Which begs the question what are we paying a deputy for ?

Because Reynolds wasn't actually employed as Airport Director to actually run the Airport. She was employed to promote endless projects that 'had' to be done so as to put large amounts of taxpayers money into the hands of the construction industry. This was literally what she was brought here to do - to promote the unnecessary runway extension - and she continued in the same way. In the Manx Civil Service, the bigger your budget, the more you get paid and this continues up the management tree, so there was also an incentive for her bosses to support her in that. Obviously while engaged in this 'important'work, she was too busy to actually be bothered to run the Airport, so a Deputy Director/Operations Manager has to be engaged to actually do the job. 1

I think the point is not why there is a Deputy, so much as why aren't they stepping in to fill the gap, you know, deputise. 2
The Phantom
I had an 'Airport Survey' come through work from the Govt a few days ago, to 'understand the requirements of business/leisure travellers'. It seemed to have been purposely designed to get me to say that I didn't want to fly to London.

And it's an endless cycle that continues throughout the Island, Douglas Prom and all the other new infrastructure "projects" that are deemed essential whilst basic maintenance goes begging. There is something warped about our economy, that this philosophy can continue almost regardless of expenditure and burden (and inconvenience) on the taxpayers. But no sign of it ending? 3

Is Nick Black the CEO responsible for the Airport? if so, anything that has happened is part of his watch.

Has anyone else heard about this HUB that is going to be built at the airport to relocate emergency vehicles and keep the recently purchased American mega fire engines ,and keep everything in a controlled heated environment , there has just been a new fire station completed across the road near the Sefton Express , you have to ask yourself where is all this money coming from and is there a requirement to build these facilities ?

Technically. But as some of us pointed out when he was put at the top of DoI, he was only there because he was a weak, ineffectual manager and could be relied on not to constrain the spending of his nominal subordinates in any way. Of course he benefits from all the spending by his salary also being inflated in line with the DoI's bloated budget. 2

I think the answers to those are a) VAT and b) No. It's almost like the income is embarrassing and we've got to spend it and get rid of it. But it's noticeable that it always seems to be on high brow, "new build" projects; not so much on upkeep of existing?

Roger, they (NOT ME) would argue that she is spending inordinate funds on projects such as the Runway Extension, Perimeter Fence, Tower, Fire Station etc. to make sure that Reynoldsway complies with all the statutory requirements for an airport. All of it. 😔 Agreed, and as @Roger Mexicopoints out it is the way of the island. I sit in hope that somewhere, behind a closed door, it all makes sense and we are just not privy to what keeps (some of) us in the lap of luxury we enjoy here, as in ignorance is bliss thinking. However, when you look around and hear what some people are experiencing, then maybe the reality that there is something fundamentally flawed about the way the resources of the island are put to use. Can this new administration correct the balance - I doubt it. By the way, the airport reminds me of a UK council estate built in the 1960's. Shabby now. 1

Except when asked to to provide chapter and verse of the statutory reasons why these 'essential' projects were required, they never got round to providing it. And other airports of similar size seemed to get away without all these extras. No doubt some of the work was needed, but even then they ended up with a new control tower that was less effective than the decrepit old one.
