If he's like the others we have had in charge, simply managing the airport is not enough, the CV demands that we forward think and cater for the millions of passengers we can attract if we have a ....... .

We have supposedly always employed "industry experts" but the place is still a bloody shambles !

Maybe so. But then don’t we have an Operations Manager, or whatever, who is in charge of the day to day routine stuff, like making sure the place doesn’t look like something from the Third World?

Agreed, however we are a small island airport with few flights, and shouldn't need rafts of expensive staff to run the place.

Is the Operations Manager vacancy still waiting to be filled ?

The Operations manager post metamorphosed into "Deputy Airport Director", with the appointment of Mr Spake.

And yes, in theory, it remains vacant technically. However the Fire Service head is filling a "temporary" post as "Operations director" and is assisting the new director

"When it was first envisaged, Chief Minister Alf Cannan said he believed it would be possible to save up to £1m a year through going arms-length, that will remain to be seen. "

It's working so well for Manx Care.

Theyre going to put a board in place too, it all carries cost.

Alfs whole SAVE program is idiocy. Either keep it in control or privatise the damm thing.

I think the point is, it needs to be "UNDER" control, not left to the ego's of the idiots who have been in charge over many years. I am not sure that privatisation would be a goer, there is not much to attract a buyer, the opportunities for revenue are limited by our locus, also it is a vital link, so I would be against privatisation and loss of control. I am all for it costing the taxpayers less but am not sure we have recruited a guy who sees his career like that !

Do we, in fact, know how much it currently costs to run the airport ?  Didn’t the independent review  of the airport, published a few years ago, determine that it was impossible to unravel the true costs from within the Ports and Department budgets ?  As a consequence, how can the way ahead be effectively managed financially without this figure and can any subsequental savings figure be accurately determined ?

Agreed, but this is Government we are talking about, did you expect strict and auditable financial control ?

The car parking used to take around £60,000 per month.   Around           £ 700. 000 pa

The minister at the time decided to distance govt from that.

All they did was succeed in upsetting a lot of users, confusing a high percentage of customers

And letting the car park look abandoned

Was there any reduction in staff or costs. I doubt it.

Was there a reduction in take up and profit. Yes.

The York Aviation report from mid-2018 had this to say:

5. Our analysis revealed that there is a lack of transparency of financial information relating to the Airport at present, which is partly due to the way the Airport is treated as a cost centre within Government. One of the key issues is the way in which the Airport is provided with centralised shared services, such as IT and HR, which are not accurately costed or allocated to the Airport. Another issue arises from the merger of the Airport with Harbours into a single Ports Division, which necessitates an estimated allocation of costs that are shared between the two.

6. This current situation makes it difficult to establish the true trading position of the Airport and, by implication, makes it hard for management to properly manage costs, which of itself creates a disincentive to improving performance, given the extent to which costs are not within the control of management.

7. The best estimate that we have been able to make of the Airport’s current trading position is a current trading deficit of around £3.7m.

It shows that a lot of the real problem is within government as a whole, not just the Airport.  But I doubt the common culture of unaccountability would changed by spinning it off into a separately-operated organisation.  Any more than it was for the MEA or it looks like is happening with Manx Care.
