It's even better that that.  According to Manx Radio we're getting "a virtual stimulator".  If that doesn't make Ronaldsway a destination in its own right, nothing will.

The thing that gets me about this is that if it was the reason this probably should have been done years ago (not least to save money on flying people away on courses to keep certifications up). Certainly it should have been done over covid when nobody could have gone anywhere. But as we shut the airport down and I’m sure some misguided souls in government thought that it was the literal end of days and it would never function as an airport again and they’d just continue to get paid for doing nothing forever we’re only now addressing the apparent issue. What still isn’t being explained though is why we are having such difficulty in maintaining ATC staff when Jersey and Guernsey who have more passengers aren’t shutting their airports down every 5 minutes. Do they have the same simulator facilities? It just sounds like another “new toys” argument from government and screw the rest of us.

Maybe that’s what they want you to do as they’ve now got £78M of extra costs to pay off with the Manxman.

Their plan is working well.

The airport has been allowed to become a national embarrassment, in cruder terms, a complete cluster f**ck.

We have navigation facilities that don’t allow planes to land in low cloud or low visibility, and often when the weather is good enough we have too few controllers to open the airport, and when we do have the good fortune for those two things not to negatively affect things, we have an airline who cancels flights because we are not a priority for them.

Most of this has been brewing for years. Some have written to government to highlight the pending problems, some have voiced concern through the media and a lot have ranted an raved through social media. Have those in power taken the blindest bit of notice? Have they f**k!. They always think know best, yet in reality they  have no actual grasp of how it all works, and no understanding of the effect that their flawed decisions will have.

It is such a sorry state of affairs - and it was all so avoidable.

If this simulator would take months to come online and cost us a million quids? . Surely  the trainees will be  fully trained and on site by then?

£ 3000 a day to buy time on one, might be a better option?

We have three airlines who cancel flights.  Here are the March and April figures:

There's not much difference between them and the same factors will be dictating this behaviour from all three.

I think you will find stats for tte last month or so will paint a different story when they are published.

They should build a Ronaldsway Airport simulator in the carpark where if you don’t actually want to risk flying you can go and quietly replicate the Ronaldsway Airport service experience by sitting in an empty concrete bus shelter on a plastic chair going nowhere with a luke warm cup of £4 coffee while they charge you £10 for 6 hours in the carpark.

We need someone to grow a pair and realise this is not acceptable. The airport director just waffles for hours with a stream of bullshit to rival the goddess of bullshit who's gone now !

Well I’ve not heard him waffling anything apart from a brief appearance on the Mannin Line a couple of weeks ago.

He seems to be hiding somewhere.

What on earth is he being paid for?

That's partly why I did the March ones to add to April to see if it was the same pattern (which it is).  So we'll have to see.  We've got the May figures from the Airport, the pax numbers do show a 7% increase on 2022, but the rate of increase seems to be slowing down, partly because post-Covid effects are dropping out.  Though they are still only 66% of the 2019 figures.  In April UK domestic air pax was 82.7% of April 2019, so it's clearly still a wider problem, but IOM seems hit particularly hard.

However the Airports figures are pretty useless for assessing movements, not least because they seem to include every seagull landing on the tarmac.  So we'll have to wait for the CAA ones to assess cancellations.

For the Masterplan it seems, of course the place can go to hell whilst we dream of the future, we may have been subject to this before. Another totally unsuitable appointment in respect of what is needed to even get the basic airport up and running.

Clearly they are jealous of the railways who already have a simulator for a non-functioning diesel engine. A striking parallel.

This is obviously the way forward, if the reality doesn't actually work it doesn't matter as long as we can simulate what's supposed to be happening. Genius.

Isn't it to help in training the ATC rather than divert other ATC (qualified to train) staff to give the training?
