(...) We are still in the situation where we are getting prices for the new barriers and machinery, Mr President. Thanks Stu, Certainly not complaining that it's free at the moment, but £500k+ per year for the Govt, without really having to do anything is surely a no brainer. Especially now that every penny counts. And no, we probably don't need some groundbreaking new fangled parking system. Just a barrier that goes up and down and accepts credit cards please. Hell, you could pay someone £50k a year and get them to sit in a little booth and still be quids in.

Roger Mexico
Modestly Stu has omitted some amusing exchanges from his own question (p 91 of latest Hansard) on when the new Airport Director would be appointed: According to a House of Keys Answer in November 2020, we were paying a consultancy business something like £60,000 a year to advise Airport management on: regulation compliance and licensing; processes and policy; quality and continuous improvement; airport management; training certification and competency; operational procedures; and airport strategy and planning. Does the Minister agree that these are all fundamental aspects of running an airport and that the new Director, when appointed, will be expected to manage these functions without relying on external consultants? The Minister: I would expect that to be the case, Mr President, yes. [...] According to a social media post that I saw last week, our Deputy Airport Director appears to be returning to his reality TV career, both at Heathrow and in Africa. Will the Minister advise whether he is leaving his job at Ronaldsway to do this or is he still being paid by the Manx taxpayer whilst getting into another fine mess for the cameras? The Minister: We digress slightly, Mr President. The Deputy Airport Director is doing that at the moment, but he is doing it in his own time at weekends and taking holidays to do so. It was also revealed that the recruitment process would be finished at the end of the month, but it would be another 3-6 months before someone was in place. As with the parking barriers, this is something that they have had a long time to organise (the announcement Reynolds was going was last May) but nothing seems to have been done by the previous administration and this is not something that can be blamed on DoI alone. 4
asitis
The security barriers on both sides of the airport have been broken for three months, pass holders can't enter without getting security to supervise it's a complete shit show !

I know one candidate for the job who could start next Monday, something I hope will be factored into the recruitment decision.

Is the Deputy job only a Monday to Friday one then?. I thought the airport was open 7 days a week.

Needs to get his Everyready torch out and get on the runway that they 'forgot' to order the lights for. Guide the planes in and with any luck it might scramble his brains back into reality mode . Guest
In my day senior management covered 24/7, each doing a seven day “on call” stint every two or three weeks. Many a night spent freezing by the runway overseeing anti icing, de-icing, snow clearing operations.

It’s a 10 hour flight minimum to Africa. Aahhh but he needs downtime as he has been under so much pressure over the last two years with all the passenger arrivals/departures and then he's had to keep on top of the maintenance and day to day requirements needed in a successful airport. Oh and ensure the upgrading of runway was carried out succesfully . He's been that busy he didn't get around to oiling the baggage trolley wheels. Or getting the barriers fixed and ensuring the lights for the runway got ordered on time and fitted ....ohhh wait !

Zulu
X-Ray machine not working for this mornings flight, all hand luggage being searched manually. First flight out delayed 40 minutes because of this. It is stressful enough for patients going across without having things delays due to the airports incompetence! asitis
It is shocking really to read all the above in the context of blowing, I've lost track, but must be close to 100 million to make the airport capable of handling 2million plus passengers a year ! Some great management appointments have been made over the years !!!! and some absolute shite sold to the taxpayers ! asitis
The management that had been in place were not interested in managing, they were interested in expansion and spending ! Managing in terms of actually running the airport was not high on their agenda, it simply wasn't sexy enough.
