There's no money because instead of investing a very small amount in maintaining what we have and using existing personal ie promote people from shop floor.  Who know what the job is about and basically why any of the problems exists, training can be given to learn how to talk management(Thomas would be a great teacher) But no its always let's spaff eye watering money on a airport shopping mall because that is what Heathrow has and look at the money thats making. Nobody goes to Ronaldsway for food and shopping experience its a local airport that would of worked just as well with a couple of portacabins and warehouse to process baggage.

Nobody takes the top jobs here because they want to manage, for instance, a small regional airport or indeed any arm of Government. What they do want to manage is their CV, which demands developments and masterplans and implementations of costly and unnecessary schemes

I don't really think that is true - though it might be a lot better if it was.  If you look at most of these who have been employed in such roles, the real problem isn't them doing a big development project and then leaving with a glowing cv.  It's that they hang around, dreaming up more and more ridiculous and badly-managed ideas, constantly failing at them and then being rewarded by a system that is suspicious of competence and protects failure to prevent any sort of accountability otherwise "who should 'scape whipping".

In any case if you look at the sort of 'projects' that these sort of people put on their cvs nowadays, it's not anything as concrete as building something.  In so far as the jargon means anything it's about privatising and cutting services and  making the lives of the front-line workers less secure.  While the bureaucracy expands and the right people get very rich.

The 3FM piece rather confuses two different things - delays and cancellations.  The research it's quoting seems to be mainly about delays.   Of course these can work in opposite directions - think how UK train operators will cancel a rail service to 'improve' punctuality.

I though I'd look again at cancellations first as they caused so much grief last year.  I've worked from the combined annual figures for UK+ airports provided by the CAA.  I've used a standardised list of 40, omitting some which seem not to report cancellation figures or do so intermittently (eg Exeter) and the currently closed (by Peel) Doncaster.  I've worked out the percentage cancelled for each airport, ranked them from highest to lowest and then compared the figures and ranking with 2022 and 2019:

As you can see the main effects on cancellation levels continue to be geography and flight mix.  Those places near the sea and using small aircraft always fare worst.  Those that have a high percentage of charter flights (Bournemouth, East Midlands) tend to not have them cancelled (delays may be different).  Over the the three years though airports tend to remain in the same part of the table.

In that context the move of IOM Airport from 20th to 11th to 8th worst doesn't really look good, now being the largest of the airports in the top third of the table (especially if you look at pax rather than air traffic movements (ATMs).

Although I think the current management of the airport and its services are weak in many respects, the airport is like all of our public services, there simply is no money ! Anything that costs money to improve at the moment is not viable as staying afloat is the number one priority !

Unless it's a project even maintenance can go swivel.

Just to follow up on airport parking. No issues using ringgo here, but, I'm going away for a few days this week.

Ringgo said it would cost me £26 in parking.

Phoned up the car hire places at the airport to find out how much they'd charge. Booked it in with Athol for £22 and I get my car washed as part of the price.

How does that make any sense ?! The people deciding these things in the Government are absolute clowns.

That’s competition for you, private operators will always price cheaper than government. I’ve used athol and downside is sometimes queuing to drop keys off and often queuing to collect keys on return as many either hiring cars which takes time. Airport parks are sometimes more convenient as just drive in , keep keys and then just go straight to car on return.

And also, Athol will be responsible for any damage etc.

I haven't paid for using the carpark for around 15 years, and always use Athol or Mylchreests. As you say, how the clowns running the Airport failed to consider that they have commercial competitors, beggars belief.

Shut up, don't tell everyone. I always use Athol and get my car cleaned/valeted - it's the only time it happens. Park right next to the terminal, never had to wait more than a few minutes on return.  Great value compared with parking on the official site and coming back to find your car's been towed away because you returned an hour late.
