Meat plant- value for money?

Another way of looking at this is that a farmer should be producing 'meat and 2 veg', any side products should be a bonus?

If a strawberry grower can produce cream, then hey presto, a double sale but if people chose to get their cream at Tesco, he can hardly complain surely?

Problem would be if the sheep farmer is not covering the cost of producing Lamb? How can the Govt help that side of the business?  ( Stop Tesco selling imported Lamb??? ).

This part of the thread is lamenting the waste of the Wool but how many of us would only buy local Lamb or any other local product???

A slightly different way of putting it, but yes you’re right, is shearing simply part of the upkeep/on going maintenance?, if the fleece cannot be sold (even at a loss) then its cost will surely be covered by being added onto the final cost price of the product?

It might, in a free market, if oversupply was not a factor in price and you had protectionist policies to stop low cost imports.

What we have is a price paid to the supplier based on an average price across a number of marts/processors in England ( less very high processing costs per unit, even after a £2 million annual subsidy ) and a depressed price in England due to overproduction, lack of import controls, and the threat of Aus & NZ trade deals.

Yet the price on the shelf to the consumer remains high. Go figure.

heard a whisper today that the abattoir is short of the funds necessary to pay farmers for their stock

How can that be?  It is not as though Manx meat is cheap, or perhaps that is the problem.  Where along the supply chain is the profit being gobbled up?

I'm trying to remember how many managers and chairmen the Meat Plant have had who have been tasked with turning it around? They always seem to claim success on purges on staff and working practices etc but it never seems to work without huge Govt subvention?

They don’t have the volume through the plant to meet all the overheads, probably only solution to save £2m pa us shutting down, however then we are reliant on shipping livestock to uk & carcasses back.

suppose they could ban exports of livestock so all farmers have to use meat plant

At one time, no off island raw meat was allowed to be sold here, all farmers used the abattoir. Supermarkets and the loss of tourism buggered it all up!

No, it was the loss of the meat derogation.  I wonder how much that benefits other areas of export.

Isn't the meat plant just to big and all singing dancing space without ever having the throughput. Bit like the Incinerator and probably the Power station. Wonder if the new test center will be a similar project. Money no object it would seem in these whims of the powers that be.
