ButterflyMaiden
The disastrous floods in Mumbai claimed thousands of lives and doubtless many more will die as a result of disease during the coming weeks. The floods are no longer front page news but are symptomatic of the many problems affecting India. Could the floods have been averted ? If this story has any credibility, it would seem property speculators, politicians and others have much to answer for. Mumbai flood story
Gladys
Sadly, I think one of the roots of many "natural" disasters can be traced back to greed or a lack of political will to deal with the issues, both locally and internationally. There is also an increasing call for multinationals to tidy up their act so that they do not fund local factions in order to gain/maintain access to the substantial natural resources of certain third world countries. As I remember the Ethiopian famine, whilst drought was a substantial intervening factor, the civil war had more to do with those needing help failing to get it! I'll stand by for a stream of invective from Rog on this one!
the-rhymes
It's a story that seems to repeat its self again and again. From the potato famine to the Union Carbide disaster. The poor suffer because of the rich cutting corners.
