Let's not forget what his experience actually is. He has sat in Tynwald for a few years and during that time he has been Minister for Home Affairs. This is such a light role that Graham Cregeen can be placed in it.

The thing about Home Affairs is that it can get away with being given to an absolute plank because the bits can more or less run themselves.  Hence Cregeen and indeed Malarkey.  But, like any other Department it's also possible for a Minister to be much more interventionist - just because it can run on autopilot it doesn't mean it has to.  I get the impression that Watterson was a much more hands-on Minister - at least Flinty complained about it enough.

There is very little opportunity to be inteventionist in the Department. The Chief Constable and Prison Governor might have to pay a little lip service to the ideas the Minister might come up with but the statutory authority rests with them, not the Minister. It would be a little iritating to have a Minister for Home Affairs that might think he can influence the way the Constabulary or the Prison is run, but that would be a very minor issue amongst the real work of either service. The Minister might be able to exert some influence over resourcing but I would very much doubt that any Minister would want to make any significant funding decisions that would have a real impact on the way the Police, Prison and Probation or Fire Service operates. As I said before it is a very light role that can only fiddle in the margins.

The gravy train rolls on...

It's not about previous record or achievement in office. It's not about the best qualified person for the job.

It's about #clubtynwald. And we're all paying for it.

The next question is - is Spuan Juan standing in Rushen again? There must be a load of candidates lined up? If he gets reelected will he stand for again for Mr Squeaker, or my guess is he will sit on the sidelines embittered and snipe away. Perhaps im wrong? Perhaps he will stand to be Chief Minister, but based on today’s vote, maybe not, but in Manx Politics who knows! Let’s face it Rob Callister could be the next Chief Minister?
