I don’t know anything about this stuff so I’d be grateful if someone could explain how this application/investment will jump start the economy ( assuming a jump start is necessary)

Will it create jobs? will it result in massively increased tax revenue?

All answers gratefully received

You may have noticed we have developed a public sector that has grown a great sense of entitlement.

The economy on the island is unsustainable so any interventions from someone with a business acumen like Musk is to be welcomed.

As to how great the benefit will be, well that depends how well we sell the island as a place to do business.

Thank you, but you haven’t answered my question.

Possibly lots of photo opportunities for the usual suspects.

I don't think it will.  Once the ground station goes online then a local telecoms company will look after the equipment via a maintenence contract.  The only thing this will do is probably draw customers away from the likes of Sure and MT, especially if fibre is still some years away.

They'll have installed their own transmitters/receivers.

You just need a spot with some fibre-optic cable, electricity and as broad a view of the sky as possible.

There's a picture on MR comments that looks to be the antenna. They look to be the same setup as Starlink ground stations elsewhere.

That's just the eggs. Wait until they hatch!

Musk ,Spacex and SES have been working together for some time  and developed the re usable launch vehicle  which has considerably reduced satellite  and space station launch costs ,amongst other things ,  there is every reason to  believe they will capitalise on the presence of SES and its Isle of Man company ,its just a couple of years ago Tesla wanted to provide course cars for the TT races , and Musk himself was due to visit the Island with a group of VIP's from SES , Musk also has a mutual    friend living in Santon ,who has also been into space ,  so providing the usual lunatic  fringe don"t make too many unwelcome waves ,  we could be seeing the birth of a new type of business for the Isle of Man

Absolute bollocks. What do you want, communism?.

We actively need some true industrialists to jump start the economy. If not then we're truly fucked.

We don’t need people like Musk. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-03-13/when-elon-musk-tried-to-destroy-tesla-whistleblower-martin-tripp

And the tangible benefits for the Island will be what?

Sadly we do. How else are we going to keep funding your Council and it's grandiose plans?

For the record Tripp was a dick.

It will line the pockets of a favoured few, very few.

All this smoke blowing really is quite pathetic.

Meanwhile, we have a crumbling infrastructure due to lack of maintenance, a health service that can't even run an emergency dental service, projects that are a million miles away from being completed on time and on budget etc etc etc.

And, the money is not his.

Anything that contributes anything to the coffers has to be encouraged unless you want the Rock to rapidly transform itself into a peat-bog in the middle of the Irish Sea.

That's the issue though. Knowing our lot the GMTP will end up paying for it with more CS positions to "manage" the smoke blowing.

We shouldn't need any more, theoretically - we should be able to use the ones currently allocated to managing the other ventures in the "space cluster".

Like the one that's under tarpaulins in JCK's yard at Balthane...
