Who will pay for the free buses? The taxpayers with increased taxes which will need to be even higher to pay for the loss of taxes from sales of fuels as well as lost fares

You're already subsidising them to the tune of millions, a few more won't make a difference budget wise, but free buses would carry enormous other benefits.

Seems to be working in Luxembourg another successful finance centre.

Started just over a year ago.

"trains, trams and buses -- in the country is now free. The government hopes the move will alleviate heavy congestion and bring environmental benefits,"

Similar objectives. Certainly worth a few ministers having a VIP visit even if there is no chance of it happening  here. 🙄😀

Free buses would be viable if there were not so bloody many of them.

They drive around empty every 15 minutes.

Make it less frequent and make it free.....................

Yes but make it free to increase uptake, like we want , we will need more frequent buses to cope with demand.

Virtuous circle.

What’s the alternative? cars being more affordable to everyone is what has forced the issue, even down to finance deals.

Finance deals can be designed to trap you into them.

Who wouldn't like the idea of a newer car on PCP for less than they'd spend on a hire purchase agreement? However, the price you'd pay at the end to keep the car is usually a sizable sum to the tune of thousands and thousands. At the end, you can either pay the final payment, or, you can trade the car in for another finance deal. Turns out, it can be quite hard to pay that final figure, but you need a car, so you chop it in for another.

The island can be quite hard going if you don't have a car at all. There are enough commutes that'd be impossible by public transport.

Note that the people working the least sociable hours tend to be doing so out of necessity, penalising them for getting to work, when there's little other option at 4 in the morning may not be the right approach.

Can't the govt just tell the local fuel company that it is required to supply E10? And slap an extra tax on the older style stuff?

There is no reason why the older stuff could not also be available at a few outlets for people still running around in heritage vehicles.

I think it’s more complex than just older vehicles, isn’t it the case we don’t have any ethanol because the petrol stations, the equipment, the storage and the entire infrastructure isn’t suitable and would all need to be upgraded? That’s what I was told many years ago when E5 was introduced.

I came across e10 fuel about 4 years ago in a tiny filling station in N.Spain. Since then in all sorts of places around Europe.

Are the garage petrol tanks really any different on IOM from everywhere else in Europe or is this just a myth to enable the government to be different and not stock this new grade of fuel. Surely if it is more eco friendly they should be supporting the change.
