Maybe not all until 3:30 but lots much later than most places now. Also “the last few months” are summer. Always busier with people walking home.
NoTail
I remember many a late drinking session at Ken Whipp's place.

You could also drink in them on a Sunday afternoon. Oh, yeah, there were plenty of shebeens - the one opposite Glencoe was the Glenfaba. Any amount of guest houses and small hotels. But most of these were not legally licensed to serve you at all let alone after hours. 9 minutes ago, Ramseyboi said: Toffs Whispers Casino Swingeasy Imps Champs Pretty much every guesthouse around Castlemona Avenue it was always the case that when the clocks went back you actually got an extra hour in the places that were licensed late because they were still open. Those listed were 12:30/1:00am. I did all those mentioned and many more. My (genuine) concern is the legally licensed piss-head pubs/'clubs'/discos (?) open until 3:30am weekends. It's shit and it's making Douglas a Shithole.

They must have been licenced although you were supposed to be a resident. I was on the on licence course with someone from the Fairfield in about 98, that's how I was able to get in! Non-Believer
IIRC, the Licensing Hours changed to a theoretical 24/7 opening (with application) back when the law changed (can't remember when exactly but it must have been 20+ years ago?). There used to be longer hours available for residents in hotel bars before that? In practice this proved to be governed by punter supply and demand rather and most pubs' hours didn't change that much in respect of later hours except maybe for Friday/Saturday nights. That supply and demand has also been the biggest driving factor in the voluntary further reduction of many pub hours and the loss of pubs too; prices and people just don't have the money now, plus a possible change in social attitudes too, plus the claimed effects of the smoking ban. It's no good having longer opening hours with no customers. Edited September 13, 2021 by Non-Believer Typo

There were enough places turning a few hundred people onto the streets early in the morning. Edited September 13, 2021 by Max Power

Plenty of Thursday and Friday mornings I went straight to work from Toffs or Jimmy B’s or one of the guest houses. Any insinuation that people wandering about Douglas trollied is worse than it was 25 years ago is just completely wrong

Toffs, EJs and Jimmy B's were late, but can you confirm they were 3:30am late. I know about the Casino, and said so earlier. That is a different matter, although incidentally there were calls for locals to be barred from the Casino, but again that is a different matter. 2 hours ago, Ramseyboi said: Not just weekends either. In many ways people are much better off financially than in the 1980s. It's just that they have different spending priorities. The average wage for much of the 80s was around £6k. Today it's over £30k with the middle classes often earning very much more Middle class people don't tend to go out drinking much (only perhaps their young). And certainly not late. They never did. And many more people today are broadly the middle-class offspring of middle class parenting. Many of the sons and daughters of those who were earning £6k in the 80s are now very well off. They have different horizons and want more than to be sat in some grim boarding house bar at 3am, signed in as a guest drinking watery beer and off to work in no fit state and stinking of fag smoke. My memories from around that time, which might be unreliable because I was normally full of rum and ecstasy, is that the nightclubs closed at 2am.
