Have you ever heard of anyone licking a bus stop in freezing weather? Some kids have an urge to do it, and they end up freezing their tongue - usually just momentarily - to the metal post. It's an odd unusual feeling and so they might do it again despite the obvious possibly danger.

Window licking is a similar sort of thing but much safer - and just as pointless other than overcoming an illogical urge - and refers to someone who might be a bit stupid and does stupid things on a whim.

I worked for a NHS trust providing a learning disabilities service and I've never heard the term either.  I didn't know what it meant* until I looked it up.  I think it's an example of one of those terms where it's wrongly assumed that everybody is familiar with it.

*I'm still not entirely sure what it means.  The Guardian article linked to seems to refer only to people with disabilities but other online definitions seem to suggest it refers specifically to people with learning disabilities.

It's American in origin so far as I'm aware, because mentally disabled children/those with learning difficulties travel to school on a "Short Bus" - and presumably some of them lick the bus windows as they go.

There's that dangerous word - "presumably"...

It's not up to me to defend Stu but I thought his comment was a play on the finger licking good saying. Presumably, people stood outside KFC drooling on the window at the thought of the chicken they were about to get. Who knows? All presumption but let's all get worked up about it and accuse him anyway.

When I was a kid it was a term to describe people with learning difficulties and it was widely used. Its a highly offensive term and I always understood it was referring to people travelling in the bus to special school and getting up close to the window and licking it. I have never actually seen anyone licking a window but I can imagine the scenario.

Whatever way you think about it its an offensive term and there is no way that a person in a public responsible position should be using it (even worse using it to raise a laugh on social media).

It doesn't offend me, but its 2022 last time I checked and its just not acceptable anymore

I didn't know that, but its been around here for at least 40 years

Its possible I agree. But I know what my guess would be. He's been around too much and too long to not know what it means.

But I had made a gaff like that, I would probably use the same excuse.

Passing Time is spot on. I'm reminded of the Derek and Clive 'some bloke came up to me and said hello' sketch.

Indeed. It was an unfortunate choice of words, let's leave it at that.

I'm keen not to see a repeat of the reputational damage to the IOM from the BLM debacle now that you're an elected official though.

And the most patronising post of the year goes to……… “The Bastard”

Congratulations

And could you please expand on the reputational damage to the Isle of Man/ BLM debacle?

Did I miss a demand for a worldwide boycott of Manx Kippers or something?

Was the United Nations reconvened to consider Mr Peter’s comments?

Just to add this has been raised on social media in the last 24 hours. The Douglas Corpy Bottom Inspectors can also fine people £5,000 for leaving their bin out. Looks like Douglas now has a really effective socialist bin Stazi victimizing it’s ratepayers on top of the reduced bi weekly collections.
