Not really surprising if the current advert for the Non-Exec Director for Manx Care is anything to go by (see https://www.jobtrain.co.uk/iomgovjobs/Job/JobDetail?JobId=16013 )

Do you know someone who could be perfect for this role?

Let them know about this vacancy and refer them via our new Employee Referral Scheme!

You’ll receive £500 (in two equal instalments and subject to conditions) for making the referral, if the person you referred is offered the role!

A total contradiction IMHO to the Nolan Principles they (rightfully) keep going on about in respect of the expectations of conduct in Public Life - but I keep forgetting its 'The IOM where you can'

Cultivating the culture seems to be going well.

recruiting GP's from on island is just taking them from somewhere else locally and moving the problem ,  we need more GP's not redistribution of the ones we have.

It would appear that wait times for appointments to see a GP are only going to get worse and there does not seem to be a plan to solve this apart from hope.

I have to ask why do we need GP's at all? Seems the receptionists, nurses and paramedics can handle it or so they seem to suggest. Or failing that your chemists (when they are open). Could save a fortune on healthcare, hire six nurses instead of a GP and you could be seen the same day. Run a few AI bots over your medical records and you're good to go.

All to squeeze in 15k more when we can't cope now. Or is the ER not constantly overwhelmed?

Seems to be a lot of platitiudes and very little action. Covid revealed was the final straw that uncovered how fractured the system was.

Other clinical professionals? Receptionists, nurses & paramedics then? Can they give prescriptions or referrals? If not then presumably you'll have to wait to see a GP after all. More delay and more red tape.

Classic government... you'll get a diluted service for more money and like it. How about a charter for patients that you will get an appointment with your GP within 5 days or same day if it's 'clinical professional'?

Also why does it take anywhere between 5-10 days to get a repeat prescription and how many get lost in the system? Is it time to audit the system and find out where it is going wrong?

You raise an interesting point.

No wish to disrespect GPs, but they are basically a human general medical database.  I suspect this will be something that is thrown to AI bots in the nearish future.  They are usually just a gateway to other medical specialists or a supplier of drugs (which Pharmacists should be able to do).

I know for a fact that rather than medical stuff a lot of the GPs time is spent chasing up stupidly mundane things like test results, which doesn't need a Doctor to do.  Or running the finances of their surgeries (give it to an accountant).

We have people who could  fill  these posts but we simply  don’t appreciate them as they waste their talents being politicians.

Knowledge, diagnostic acumen  and treatment management decisions present no concerns  for those with a natural ability to see straight to kernel of any complex problem and deliver an answer which is fast, bold, imaginative yet simple and  decisive. No matter if it be wrong.

Many if the nurses can give prescriptions, certainly at Hailwood & I know at Palatine do . I saw nurse at Hailwood for infected finger a few months ago & got antibiotics prescribed, normally much quicker than waiting for GP

If they broke down the population increase into specific targets it might have been received better:

Eg 20 teachers, 80 nurses, 20 doctors, 5 air traffic controllers, etc

more like  pensioner, pensioner, pensioner.
