IOM DHSC & MANX CARE

I once commented on here a while ago, saying has the bottom of the barrel been scrapped in terms of how bad things have got, well it’s getting there. I’m sure our politicos will come on here and other social media, certainly if it affects the DOI, or the Housing Board then Messiah Thomas will come at the slightest hint of criticism, ready to rebut. I am afraid hard choices have to be made, but again it’s a question of priorities. Perhaps the money being saved is funding the TT? Or the latest DOI vanity project?

And always release bad news late on Friday so no one notices.

After office closing on a Friday, so there are no managers contactable - even though the managers always claim they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The announcement is bad, but the arrogance of the timing is disgraceful - a bunch of smug, contemptible people sitting around a table, and deciding "Let's make the announcement at 5pm on a Friday. That will reduce the adverse comments we get." And they all smile and nod in agreement.

I do not swear much, but the timing of this announcement is just a deliberate "Fuck you" from Manx Care management.

Guaranteed no MHKs are going to make anything other than weak, ineffective comments.

And of course it is such a false ‘saving’ as cost of treating a woman with advanced breast cancer rather than catching it early, is much more - financially and as part if our humanity. We have the ability to reduce suffering - but instead close down preventative medicine.

I despair …

No money. The cynicism in me, says that the money saved will used to pay Dr Ransom.

But breast screening is basic healthcare. How can we be withdrawing basic but essential healthcare checks from our NHS system? Amazed there has been no outrage about this so far. Once again the IOM fails to do the basics while it focuses on multi million pound pie in the sky initiatives.

Do we still have a breast care specialist/surgeon?

And as usual the Manx Radio story fails basic journalist standards. Where is the information on numbers screened each year, number of cases/incidence of breast cancer on the island, information on impact of delay on diagnosis, and comment from relevant expert or cancer organisation on likely impact of this service not happening.
Instead, no context at all.

Here's some figures on the effect of breast cancer screening from a question by Edge in the last Tynwald before the election (July 2021):

There's no press release on the website with any more details.  But it's clearly not the sort of announcement that should be made all of a sudden without explanation or the ability to get further information.  A lot of people will be worried.

If the government stopped/banned this stupid bank staffing arrangement we'd have a proper nursing and medical service.

But without the bank (and locum) staff we'd be worse off, imo. Full-time medical staff-levels will never reach the required minimum at Noble's without them so they'll always be necessary. Not unique to Noble's, same everywhere in the NHS.

A couple of people seemed to have joined recently - though routine screening would presumably be done by nurses etc.

Routine screening has, I believe, always been contracted out. The mammograms are carried out by radiographers here, but the reporting was done in the UK. At one point it was in Coventry - my information may not be current.

There is still debate in academic circles as to the utility of breast screening. Something like 10 women are harmed unnecessarily for each invasive cancer detected. And of those cancers which seem to have a survival advantage if detected early, there is lead time bias to take into account.

It’s not as clear cut that ‘screening=good, no screening=bad’ as people might imagine.

To be clear though, I have absolutely no idea why the local programme is suspended. I found out about it here, this evening.

Say a lot about Nobles communication structure!

Nah, they spent all their money on that bellend Jonathan Michael. Which is why DESC are out to humiliate Dr Ranson rather than pay her off quietly.
