Really? Athletes about to compete don't go out for several pints, a slap up meal, a boogie and bed at 1:00a.m.  The majority do not have a team following them around. They belong to clubs who put each other up. They drink lots of water, eat specialist foods that they probably carry with them and spend next to nothing. 

I have nothing against cycling or the cyclists. However, they are not big money spinners as far as tourism is concerned. If we could attract foreign spectators, that would be a different thing.

My relatives were staying at the same hotel as some of the teams the last event we had here and we had dinner at the same time as those guys they put away a huge amount of pasta and red wine after the stage, the management were propping the bar up most of the night. Don't kid yourself thinking they don't spend any money or eat anything.

You are so far out of touch I am staggered. There were not clubs but teams. Wealthy teams with wealthy fans and follows. The actual riders themselves are a minority and they are just normal blokes. Some of them can eat and drink for their countries anyway. If you were saying this in 1980 I would have agreed with you. But its not and its nothing like that now. Cycling is a massive sport with a massive following. Towns compete to host the start and finishes of stages. The British Champs on the Isle of Man was a massive success. We should be looking to host a stage of the Tour of Britain not whinging about roads beings closed for 3 hours on a Sunday morning.

This Festival takes the exact format pioneered in the 1991 Manx Mountain Challenge in which Stirling Moss took part.  That was his final event on the island.

My gripe is that we have the government making these events happen. As in, organising them and paying the losses, without ANY looking at return on investment.

If you look to the adjacent isle/ mainland these type of events are run/ promoted by private company's. They live or die by their popularity, ROI.

Letting the IOM  CS spend money in this way is wrong.

Private enterprise that brings over music acts can live or die

Private enterprise that brings over car rallys  can live or die

Private enterprise that brings over cycle events can live or die

Private enterprise that runs off road motorcycle events can live or die

You get the idea, Niche events need to be setup by people who REALLY CARE, people who are into the kind of event proposed.

A Civil Servant tasked with setting up a, for example, cycle event, will not have the same drive as someone with "skin in the game"

As my original post, you only have to look how half arssed the organisation of  the recent events is to see what I mean, the forthcoming cycle and rally events, based on the signs they have posted on the roads are no better..........

Does IOMG spend money on music acts? We know that IOM Arts Council does but that's part of their remit in a much broader cultural offering.

They generally are set up by people who care. I was one of the organisers of such an event a couple of years ago. I didn’t make any money out of it. It was done for the love of the sport and to bring something to the Island

the IOMG doesn't spend any money on music as Doris only books tribute bands or hasbeens she's heard of which are cheap and some of which will work for food. i thought when she was suspended it might change but no The Bootleg Beatles, The Real Thing and The Quo Experience is what we get. FYI i am not dissing these guys as musicians or performers i know some of their shows are excellent.

There are other promoters bringing acts over too. Whether they get any discounts on the rental of the Villa and Gaiety, I don't know. I think we are limited by the capacities of the venues as to the viability in bringing bigger acts over. We sometimes win out when people want to do a pre-tour gig in the sticks to shake things down.

I am on the island for a long weekend, staying with family.

Driving the Peel Road toward Peel from Douglas I noticed the biggest ever collection of Honda soft top "Sports Cars"  I have ever seen, ever, in a convoy, of sorts. (Interspaced with a couple of tractors and vans) 

Question for Derek Flint  -

Are You Derek, yes you Derek,  responsible for bringing over this massive collection of Hair Dressers?

And if so, what are the Premier League footballers planning on doing to get a  haircut for this weekends matches?

Are the footballers all coming to the island too?
