2112 Posted October 20, 2021 Share Posted October 20, 2021 According to the Nations Propaganda Mouthpiece this afternoon, Bill Shimmins, Vowel Mangler, ex Middle MHK has been nominated by Daphne Caine for a berth. So basically it was a case of retire your seat, as you were afraid of putting your record to scrutiny. To some his retirement and nomination seems to be coordinated. Roger Mexico Posted October 20, 2021 Share Posted October 20, 2021 Shimmins is the only nomination published so far (nominations have been open since 4 October) but there is up to noon on 4 November to get your nomination in. I think not standing again isn't quite the same as losing your seat and of those who didn't stand again, Shimmins probably had a better chance of returning than Quayle, Robertshaw or Skelly. But it's a bit of a mystery why he decided he couldn't stand for personal reasons and now is putting himself forward for a job which ought to require a very similar commitment in terms of time etc. 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Didn’t stand for re election due to personal reasons so while a five year term as an MHK wasn’t viable for him just over a year as an MLC is. To suggest it was deliberate is just a bit thick, given he stood down long before we knew KLB and JPW were even standing for keys never mind getting elected. Nice to see the usual moaners having a go already though. In his 2016 manifesto, Shimmins stated that his priorities were economic growth, reducing the public pension deficit, reducing the size and scope of government and maintaining quality of life for residents. There's only been one nomination a fortnight after they opened. Then there were seven in the same period and Henderson got his in the next day after it started. If he couldn't make much difference to the way the Government handled finances when he was a member of the Treasury team, what difference does think he could as a LegCo member? It's not time-limited, anyone elected would be able to stand again in 2022 and all those recently elected to fill a casual vacancy (Wild, Poole-Wilson, Sharpe) did exactly that and got in again.
