Why not charge them £3 million each, like Johnson does for the Lords? Benefit public finances, tax the rich, and get people who really want the job.

Doesn't that money go into the Tory party coffers, rather than the public purse?

Democratically elected by who. Our last MHKs were democratically elected by the voting populace. Hardly a recipe for success.

Exactly. Turning the selection of MLCs in to a popularity contest would be a stupid idea.  The general public don’t vote for the best people for a role (in this case, a role that most of them don’t understand) they vote for that nice man from the post office or just the names they recognise.

They are democratically elected if you think of it, we elect the MHKs and with that give them the mandate to select MLCs as and when, it goes with the job.   If you don’t think the M.H.K. you voted for is capable of making an informed decision perhaps you should not have voted for them.    Leaving aside the fact that many had best of bunch to select from or Hobson’s choice.    Great film that.

Yes something along these lines was said on Sky News last night - ie. 'they [political parties] all do it'

Speaker of the Lords (a Tory I think) complaining there's about 800 peers he has to deal with

The money isn't a benefit to public finances

It's an argument for proportional representation and state funding of political parties

They take a mandate to appoint MLCs

That isn't democratic process

By the voting public - the people who pay for it all

As far as MHKs go, you have to make do with those that have been elected

If you feel strongly about something then you have to do what you can to influence their thinking

Be careful tho' - Unlucky Alfred will hit out if what you say doesn't accord with his view of what's constructive input

It already is but they only need to impress 24 people (not even that in reality); and if they want to keep their job they need to do as they are told. The prime example of this is Bill Henderson. The man wrote an essay about why Legco should be abolished before he was "elected".

The truth is it either needs to be abolished or, a back of a fag packet plan, we elect 32 Members of Tynwald (get rid of the Bishop, scrap the presidency and AG). Then 9 Members are voted in from the elected Members to form the Legislative Council who's job is scrutinise legislation (maybe even become the official opposition). 9 Members in Comin, 9 in Legco.

Either way the Keys shouldn't be allowed to elect their mates to a very lucrative position.

Delighted that so many people apparently took this suggestion seriously and responded accordingly.

Just to be clear.

1. you accept the IoM rate is higher, not lower, than AUS and NZ by a factor of 10 and 100 respectively ( in round terms )?

2. You’ve confused me with someone else?

Yes, to both. The IOM death rate has been much much higher, and yes, I confused you with someone else.
