Really?

ok..

Unless he happened to be an admin on here yeah. There are a couple of ways you could get the IP of everyone who viewed a particular post, though not which user each belonged to. Alternatively you could get IP addresses by PMing people, but that's not particularly stealthy and relies on them actually reading it.

And assumes they aren’t behind a vpn/at work/on someone else’s WiFi/at the pub/on mobile data etc etc.

Total nonsense

Suppose as a very simple eg that only you and I are viewing this thread. Then I could see your IP in the log of a server hosting content I have posted in the thread (or in, say, an invisible signature).

Also - you don't have to actually browse in real-time - you could basically script that. Even with multiple people viewing a thread you could quickly narrow it down.

You could, but there are also various spiders that crawl forums constantly, and people who are set to invisible, and people browsing from non-home locations. You'd be hard pressed to get any actual value out of such an attempt.

Well 'value' is relative. You can get most posters' IP addresses if you want to however. Especially if you are a bot.

Not going to argue it though.

For it to be reliable, particularly on a thread that was getting the traffic that one about Amy was, you'd need a significant length of time. And not to announce it in advance, changing people's browsing habits.

The short version is, technically possible (but implausible), entirely empty as a threat.

It's not in the least bit implausible.

It's not as if a forum typically receives millions of unique visitors simultaneously.

Most times here there are a few people viewing any thread at any one time. That's a really basic bit of scripting if you think about it. Remember that Mastermind game with pegs. It's basically that.

Even this thread has 6-10+ every time I look at it. You're also assuming her partner (ex partner?) was any good at programming.

Surely that would log the IP of the server hosting MF.

I know single pixel images are used in emails to get the IP address of the recipients computer - assuming they don't just use a web based mail reader

Could you really be arsed? You'd have to be a complete loon to go to all that trouble. I can understand the mods doing it but other than that these people should really go out and socialise with real people

So long as the image was hosted by the person, the request will come from user browsers not the MF server.

Why are you all speaking in tongues?

Jeez, you wanna be in our house when they are watching football on the telly.

(Last time I watched a football match was when Bobby Charlton and likes of good ol' Nobby Stiles were playing).
