If you check out the Planning Application, under the REP section, you will see that there are some very well-known and influential folk, including an MLC, who are hell bent on stopping this development, and who really think that preserving an ancient, but unsafe, stone wall, is more important than building places for people to live.

https://services.gov.im/planningapplication/services/planning/planningapplicationdetails.iom?ApplicationReferenceNumber=22%2F00148%2FCON

If the Island is to move forward, we need to find a better balance between the needs of the wider population, encouraging investment and progress, and the whims of a few luddites and eccentrics, who want to preserve everything, regardless of whether it is really significant or important.

Ha, I note the Manx Taxpayers Alliance submitted a letter of support. Conflicted much?

If you're going to raise money and buy the buildings to preserve them then that's great. But if not get your beaky noses out of other people's property (looking at you 'Victorian Society').

I ironic thing about the Victorian Society is that the Victorians didn't give a shit about heritage and just ploughed through everything building what they wanted where they wanted.

I would support a building scheme if it a) the property owners actually commenced building straight away from planning approval rather than leaving it a while, b) they had the funding and a decent contingency  c) once they started the work they paid their suppliers, and service providers without messing, and then halting the work and d) the building work didn’t disrupt access to the Quay or cause aggravation for other business owners. Let’s see what happens?

I would imagine that the developers will find out that having Josem involved in your campaign hugely curtails the likelihood of it being a success.

Agree, don’t think it was a wise move. The Manx Taxpayers Alliance for it to be noticed should be impartial.

I wonder how many signatures the Kelproperties petition has? Publicity yes it’s got for its cause, not positive publicity. It will be seen like other property developers, greed  (not forgetting IOM estate agents who no doubt would be privy to the discussion) driven as opposed to making a return but also putting something back. Let’s be realistic, if you buy a building, especially an old building you take a risk - speculative - gaining planning permission, and if it’s granted, albeit with conditions, the value of the building/site increases (in theory). If they fail to get permission, it’s a risk, then back to the drawing board.

Totally agree, and I think it’s unwise of Micheal Josem to get involved. Why didn’t the developers/owners get specialist advice? Can they not afford it? Questions abound?

Something needs to be happen to the site, and soon.   The structural supports which are blocking half of the road (walkway?) are a proper eyesore

Something needs doing with the old Lord Street bus station site too, but IOMG are too scared to get involved.

A cleared and flattened site would look better than the current dump.

It is but it needs to be redeveloped immediately, but I’ve got a feeling it will end up the same as the old bus station site a few yards away, a car park with planning permission (worth a lot of money). It’s down to the powers that be to lay down stringent rules, and if nobody likes it ….,…. Tough, sell it on.

Strange how Marlene Maska MLC writes to them on Legco headed paper whilst making it clear she’s writing in behalf of the Building Conservation Form. I thought they could only use the paper for official matters to do with their role as MLC?

Sadly an unelected town hall ex civil service busybody. I never understood what she brought to the table as an MLC, apart from being complaint and a good establishment person.

Doesn't she have some architect/Town Planning qualifications???

If so, she must have some expertise even if you disagree with her!!!

I don’t disagree with her. I’m just wondering why would you send a view expressed by a committee you sit on in a personal capacity on official Tynwald headed paper when it has nothing to do with your role as an MLC. It’s just like trying to pull rank on people - look at me I’m an MLC so you’d better take note!

I’m not disagreeing with you. Firstly she should object or express her opinions as a private individual. Is she expressing views as a member of a society eg Victorian Society?

Would the views of those overlooking the proposed development (South Quay Aoartments)  hold a greater sway?
