Newson's on the Quay

It was bought as a registered building and has been left to go to shit. The owners now say it’s beyond repair, ignoring that enforcement re regd buildings and planning application assessment now is in each case referenced against the condition as at date of registration.

Road closed for emergency demolition.

Could see that coming when I walked past a few weeks ago - as a result of sheer neglect.

How is this continually allowed to happen?

There will be something new and shiny there soon ( which is no bad thing) but there would of never been permission granted to demolish what was already there, so why just allow it to rot?

Either make people preserve what is there OR allow them to demolish.  This nonsense where you cant demolish but can let something fall into disrepair needs to come to an end as it benefits nobody.

Almost two years later..........

The first sentence isn't true:

The publicly available land transactions record confirms that 25-28 North Quay was purchased in 2016. Source: https://www.gov.im/about-the-government/government/open-data/economy/land-transactions/

However, the Former Newson's Trading Building 27-28 North Quay was registered on 13 April 2018 Source: https://www.gov.im/categories/planning-and-building-control/registered-buildings-and-conservation-areas/is-my-building-registered/

The registration of the building happened after it was purchased by the current owners, not before. It is inconceivable that the current owners would have bought the thing if they had know it was a registered building!

The various professional investigations have found that the deterioration of the building happened long ago. If people wanted to save the thing, they should have done so in the 20th century, when it might have been possible.

I feel the pain, but to be fair any building whatsoever can be repaired/restored/refurbished. Although it takes skill, desire and money.

I think the owners need to find a surveyor/lawyer who can argue effectively the case for dropping registration.

It was bought with the intention of demolition and a new building being erected. The criminal fraternity of the IoM decided later to 'protect' another pile of crap for posterity and the great Manx nation!

If you read the documents on the planning application/appeal that's exactly what they have done.

Sadly, the luddites have found someone to say the opposite! If they're that keen, let Masker, Guard, Kelly and Co. buy it and spend their own money on it.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail, in the end.

Any disclosures to make on your interest in this topic @Josem?

Clearly not argued effectively enough.

Rubbish.  It was listed after they purchased it, which is an absolute disgrace

If this isn’t approved this week then heads need to roll
