In 1940 Britain was not in a position to do anything about the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands. And let's not forget that many thought that Britain stood no chance and should make peace (whilst others leaned towards supporting the Nazis because they so hated London). They did nothing to defend them and basically ignored them when they were occupied. It's only our location that saved us from the same fate. That was 80 odd years ago and they have defended us from precisely nothing since. Long millions of the Manx tax payer's money used to finance unnecessary killing all over the world.

There was a token defence initially, but against an overwhelming invading force both in numbers and firepower, that defence was on a hiding to nothing so rather than fight to the last bullet it was decided to surrender for the sake of the civilian population. The same reasons why Britain refrained from staging a counter-invasion as there was little to gain from it.

I was talking about defending us, not a small, dubious and recent brass plate industry of ours.

There was also a massive evacuation, most notably of children.
