They can drill sideways enough from miles away to suck dry anything that we may be sitting on!

Presumably so could we...

Don't have a problem if we supplement our electricity supply with some wind powered generators ,  but when the wind doesn't blow  or we have too much wind  and the blades are feathered  you need something more sustainable ,  the correct mix for the Island is something the experts are working up now ,and in fairness  it should include another inter connector  cable to the UK , forget wave and tidal for the moment both very expensive and high maintenance  ,

as greener energy options are further developed  there will be plenty of opportunities  to revisit  our energy policy ,especially when  Ukraine , world fuel costs and the  massive cost of dealing with Covid  are starting to be resolved  and when we can actually be in a better position to afford  to do something ,  and what might be the  cost the taxpayer

FWIW even when there appears to be no wind there's enough to keep my local turbines spinning, I've never seen them tied up in a storm either.

Thats correct. However the output is reduced when the wind is less. This is the same with solar panels of course but relativelyto the intensity of the sun.

I don't believe modern turbines need to be tied up. I believe they can be safely operated up to 100mph wind speed.

If sufficient capacity of wind turbine was put in such that an average windspeed meets average demand then it would have to be topped up with imported electricity to make up the deficit but would offset this by exporting when the windspeed is above average.

Its fairly normal operation.

Batteries?  I know some of the windy Scottish Isles are looking into it.

Not even the earliest one either:

Though I suspect it wouldn't be worth it with Sulby.

Edited to add: See also:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falls_of_Foyers

and especially:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ffestiniog_Power_Station

It definitely wouldn't be worth it for Sulby. Its miles too small, not high enough by some way and you need a high reservoir and a low reservoir anyway

I've been to this. It is amazing, the cave the turbines are in is huge. The turbines are huge. The amount of water involved is huge. Everything about it is huge.

The Isle of Man is small.

I'm sure DOI could build this under N. Barrule.
