City of Douglas

Good point, well made. But just an observation - probably best not to use "delapidated shithole" when attempting a comparison to Peel, which literally dumps all of its shit out of a hole into the bay, past the broken skatepark, closed shops, abandoned hotels, silt-filled marina and ramshackle industrial estate. People will be confused which one you're referring to.

But Douglas always gets first dibs at everything and anything.  So they now have to live up to their name.

BTW - does the Mayoral status change when a Borough becomes a City? Will they have to go out and buy a new chain etc??

I thought it did, but apparently that's not the case any more and you have to go in for yet more competitions to try to get this 'honour'.  So if they want a new chain, they'll have to go for the time-honoured method of 'losing' it.

Biggest town gets largest share shocker.

Douglas would be nothing if it wasn't for the Victorians. Peel at least has bone fide heritage etc.

Anyway, I've no real axe to grind for or with either of them, they both have "something" going for them, it just depends on what you're expect out of a City.

Cheers we had a great night.

Maybe invest in some earplugs if you don’t like the noise that comes with living in the middle of town?

Expect the same again tonight after the football this afternoon.

I really don’t get people who live in a town complaining about noise.  It’s fully expected whether it be people walking home after a night out or the council workers cleaning everything and do basic maintenance early in the morning before the roads and pavements get busy

We've lived in Douglas more than 25 years and accept the usual noise that comes with it. It's only since the 3:30am licences have been granted to Jaks and 1886 that there is rowdiness around 4:00am every Saturday and Sunday morning.

That is unacceptable.

I am led to believe that much of the rowdiness is fuelled by cocaine and other drugs.

Douglas is on a slippery slope to becoming a run down dump with the authorities pampering to the Lowest Common Denominators in our society.

We have enough Right Honourables already..... we really don't need any more.

There have been 3:30 licenses for numerous venues in the last 25 years.

Douglas has been the entertainment capital since the early 1900s, and alongside the many pubs (most now closed) had many late night venues in the 80s/90s/00s - Paramount/Continental/EJs/Toffs/Whispers/Lido/Casino/Strand 58/Jimmy B's/Studebakers/Dow Jones/Nikkei Dow/Cave/Zhivagos/Bushy's.

If anything, it has less clubs and fewer licenses at the moment than it's ever had.

Rowdiness is nothing new, drunks stumbling home is hardly unexpected in the middle of a city. There's always quieter places to move if you're really bothered.

Shouldn’t a city have a Lord Mayor ?    There has to be something to distinguish the difference tween a town and a city.    That will be the next thing…..

Don’t be giving IOMG big ideas otherwise instead of a mayor, there will be a Metro Mayor - complete with a new team of civil servants.

You laugh, buy I hear there are a few western Manx Mafia extremists who are highly agitated by recent developments.
