Amadeus
Nice effort by the IOM RPU for this year's campaign. Worth highlighting as sadly every year people still drink drive. From the IOM RPU Facebook page: Our annual Anti- Drink/Drug Drive Campaign is now underway. This year the campaign centres on ‘Making the right choice’. We are urging people to really think about the choices they make, especially when it comes to drink or drug driving, where we see an increase at this time of the year. We are hoping the campaign will certainly make people think with our ultimate goal of reducing the number of drink/ drug drivers, ideally down to none. The effects of drink or drug driving can extend far beyond that of the driver, it can affect their health, family, friends, job, home, not to mention any other people involved where the right choice isn’t made and collisions occur. There is no profile for a drink or drug driver: gender and lifestyle is irrelevant; it is all down to the individuals making the right choice at the time. This year the island’s emergency services have come together with local people to make the campaign possible, which will be complemented by a policing operation aimed at targeting drink or drug drivers who can cause devastation for so many at this, what should be, a joyful time of year. To bring solutions to the problem of drink or drug drivers, we are also working in partnership with the Taxi Trade and Bus Vannin, who play a pivotal role in assisting to get people home safely. The local video below shows the shattering events of making the wrong choice. Do the right thing this festive period Make The Right Choice and Don’t Drink or Drug Drive. #MakeTheRightChoiceIOM #dontdrinkordrugdriveIOM
Derek Flint
They’ve done well. Though I hope they haven’t gone away from a public health led approach. It is where is really should lie. Availability of public transport and private hire helps massively. Hopefully this is the year it all comes together.
Non-Believer
If Govt are as joined up as they claim then there's 100+ minibuses that could be mobilised Island-wide for a start for a boost to public transport over the festive season and its peak periods?

Public Transport yes, Taxis yes - though expensive. Though the best idea would be to book a hotel room - premier inn, cheaper than a taxi, but make sure your not too hungover in the morning. Offer them £15-£20 an hour instead of minimum wage and see how many takers they get? After all, there's no price on road safety and if we've got £100M to throw at a Dock, what's a few £thousand if it helps saves lives over a ten day period?
Annoymouse
Police rely heavily on the public to grass people up, random stop checks late at night/early morning (6am not just 8pm) would be nice to see, a functioning alcoholic can drive a car pretty well, certainly well enough to not be reported. I assumed you were talking about the Bus Vannin minibus fleet, and therefore bus drivers employed by BV. Aren't they already on pretty good money, not minimum wage? And again, are there enough of them?

Mobilise as many of them as they can over Xmas and New Year and make it worth their while? 1

Start up drivers on zero hour contracts get just over £11 a hour currently . Theres zero hour contract drivers on the main fleet not just minibus fleet . The minibus drivers are on more than minimum wage, it was just shy of £10 an hour when I last saw an advert, £9.70 I think it was, not really much money for the responsibility involved though.
Amadeus
Well for ages we complained they earn too much. Now they earn less it’s still not right. Mind you, a lot of things aren’t right at BV and wages are the least of the issues.
nelwd
The best they have done yet, but still a way to go until they are as good as the ones that they do in Australia. I doubt however if our politicians have the guts to allow such a campaign on the IOM as it is rather hard hitting. Compare it with this one Or indeed a summary of a few of their campaigns in It is also worth having a look at their motorbike ones, which would be good in the run up to the TT and summer as they present a variety of views, as well as rider education. 1
