Some years ago I was travelling from Heysham to IOM and we were on the boat and the engines developed a fault we were deigned to have started our journey so we were all taken of and bussed to Mor ome at the steamies expense possibly because we were aboard when the voyage was abandoned, if you had not boarded you would have been on your own.  For some reason my IPad has gone weird…spirits.😶

Unfortunately, in the event of cancellation or delay they do not.

You’re wrong, Cassie. EU261 does confer rights.

They aren’t the same as air passenger rights, and extreme weather is, naturally, excluded.

Begs the question of whether a pea souper is extreme weather.. it’s not like rough seas and high wind. Ship could still sail. It’s about manouverability and the presence, or otherwise, of assistive technology ( such as harbour radar in HEY )

Your ship's crossing was cancelled

If the ferry or cruise you are booked on is delayed or cancelled, the carrier or the body managing the terminal has to inform you of the new estimated departure and arrival times within 30 minutes of the originally scheduled departure time. They must also provide information on your passenger rights.

If the service is cancelled, the carrier must offer you a choice between:

a refund of your ticket and where necessary a free return journey back to your initial departure point – for instance, if the delay prevents you from fulfilling the purpose of your trip

or

re-routing under comparable conditions to your final destination at the earliest opportunity at no extra cost

If you miss a connecting transport service because of a cancellation, the carrier must make every effort to inform you of alternative connections.

You are also entitled to assistance in the form of:

snacks, meals or refreshments, in proportion to the waiting time, provided they are available or can reasonably be supplied on the ship or in the terminal

accommodation if you have to stay overnight – for up to 3 nights, at a maximum rate of €80 per night – and transport to your accommodation and return to the terminal

You are not entitled to accommodation if the cancellation was caused by severe weather conditions.

Your ship's crossing was delayed at departure

If the service is delayed for more than 90 minutes, you will be offered a choice between:

a refund of your ticket and where necessary a free return journey back to your initial departure point – for instance, if the delay prevents you from fulfilling the purpose of your trip

or

re-routing under similar conditions, to your final destination at the earliest opportunity at no extra cost

You are also entitled to assistance in the form of:

snacks, meals or refreshments, in proportion to the waiting time, provided they are available or can reasonably be supplied on the ship or in the terminal

accommodation - if you have to stay overnight (up to €80 per night for a maximum of 3 nights) - and transport to your accommodation and return to the terminal

Does Heysham have "assistive technology"?

Isn't it the case with flights that once checked in you are in their care. If you haven't checked in a slightly different responsibility applies.

I might be dreaming that.

But it was the case then if those passengers at Heysham had checked in then they are in effect 'in journey' and the SP would have an obligation for their welfare.
