Government has created the rental problem by not investing into into own housing programme to provide housing at reasonable rents. So the private sector can charge what it likes as demand outstrips supply. They like the ignore the problems or kick the can down the road. Or give it plenty of waffle, spin and bullshit. The brownfield urban sites in central Douglas will still be empty at the next General Election, and sadly I can’t see the new Housing and Communities Board, chaired by Chris Thomas actually getting anything off the ground, plenty of talk but little action. SleepyJoe
Mr Thomas is talking about the forthcoming work of the Housing & Community Board at the Manx Legion on Monday evening The workstreams of the Board are included as an appendix to the island plan that goes to Tynwald for a vote of approval on Tuesday It'll be more action than words thereafter hopefully

Maybe it could work here, with parents encouraged to put into the child’s savings - could be used for when the child reaches 18, maybe there be enough savings to pay for a deposit, rent and utilities? Although we are low income (20,000 pa between us), We have always put a little away in a savings a/c for each grandchild since they were born. We give the result to each G/child as they reach 18. to use as they see fit. So far they have been sensible and left the cash in their a/c and added to it as a help towards their house deposit.

FFS Chris Thomas has only been in the role 3 months with no board in place so give him a chance, go along to the meeting & find out the plans & ask questions instead of sniping on here

Chris Thomas had 4 and a bit years as Minister of Policy and Reform, and didn’t exactly set things alight. Park Road site and it’s plans were devised nearly 10 years ago, if Government were concerned about housing and brownfield site redevelopment, this site would be full of FTB, Mixed Tenure, Shared Ownership and Shared Equity Housing. I am avoiding pub/club venues and crowds due to risk of possible Covid spreading. 1
SleepyJoe
The Park Road site is down for a new primary school I think - are those the plans you mean?
