Not oft heard in the same sentence. It would have to bring in some serious business to pay for itself. How many people want to look at an old boat (no disrespect intended), and are they the free spending type that's what Castletown has in mind? Perhaps not.

I haven't seen them Perhaps a committee of Tynwald will drag the lady before them & enquire as to why the £5m option is the preferred way forward Technically there's seven options listed in the full report. One of them is doing nothing[1], one is putting it back in the damp cellar which would be silly and the other five are building something new to display it in, which all cost about £5 million. I actually think there's too much being assumed over the future of the Museum here and how they develop it and the discussion should actually be wider. [1] Which costs £2.68 million because they still want to do lots to the Nautical Museum.
Kopek
Without the Castle as the major draw I don't think that Castletown would get this as a stand alone display? Sir Gerwan the Moore is suiting up in his armour at this very moment to protect the Lady !

Close the Nautical Museum and place it in the Peel Museum?

Kopek
How much entry fee to the Boat display? Locals will go once, then it's down to Tourists, doubt the Coach Trippers will pay? Let's face it, we're getting it whether we want it or not! Let's hope it can be kept to budget!!! *** Castletown needs something? Co op, a butchers and a Castle. Not a lot of reason to go there? *** Not a hope in a boat cellar???
hissingsid
If there is a charge not many locals will go they have had years to see it free before it was put inside.
Kopek
It could be that we have seen many images of the row boat but an amount of people will take advantage of the 'New' display but as I say, only once! Should be free to locals???

Kopek
Those roadside speed indicators!!! I just say Meeeehhhh, sod off, and carry on as I like! ...but then I'm a taxi driver, so I would, wouldn't I???
The Bastard
Was loaning to the UK National Maritime Museum at Greenwich considered as an option ? It's a wonderful piece of history, but 5M+ for a dedicated museum in the post-tourist, post-COVID era is a big ask for a small community in decline. Might be better off in a national collection where more people are likely to see it.

SleepyJoe
Community in decline? The nautical museum is our national collection MNH should put forward a proposed 10 year development plan for all it's estate, to include enhancement to both Castle Rushen and the nautical museum
Non-Believer
We could send it to San Diego so it can be parked up next to that other piece of Manx nautical history, the Star of India 😁 Edited January 20, 2022 by Non-Believer typo

One man’s meat etc You make a fair point. Health, education and police are pretty clear cut. Infrastructure is a muddle and always will be under the current regime. But there's obvious ones like ports, airports and roads. It's pretty clear an old rowing boat isn't essential.
