A taste of things to come, with all the parish pumps around the island taking the opportunity to increase their rates. Government would have actively encouraged them anyway. The next stage will be Ashies tax hikes, and new stealth taxes.
Shake me up Judy
The ordinary rate-payer is subsidising the huge public housing and sheltered homes stock in Ramsey.

There's more to it as well, SMUJ. This has been building for years, although the Commissioners are not immune to inflation and energy costs too. The Board have often been in the dark on some matters too. Edited January 28, 2022 by Non-Believer typo

I'll be paying £2,400 council tax (after a 25% reduction for single occupancy) for a 3 bedroom bungalow in a nice location. So stop complaining... hissingsid
We don’t get a single occupancy reduction.

0bserver
Why are we continuing with this nonsense of so many local authorities. The answer of one all-island council is screaming at us in the face. The cost of disposing of 1kg of rubbish from Port Erin should be identical to disposing of 1kg of rubbish from Ramsey. A street cleaner in Castletown should be earning the same hourly rate as a street cleaner in Peel. No local authority on the island should be carrying on with this sort of hierarchy End this madness and give us an all-island rate so we are all contributing fairly to services. 5
Amadeus
The minister was actually at the MA meeting last night. The question on local reform, predictably, was raised and he mentioned that it comes up on a regular basis and has done for at least the last 40 years. Like I said elsewhere, two factions on this: the ones who want one authority (or maybe at least the 4 plus 1 model) and the ones who think it’s better to have multiple authorities for more granular service delivery. I know a good number of my fellow councillors in Douglas are totally up for reform, even if it might mean cutting our own jobs. Hard to get anything moving with so many people involved and many of them against it. Would require political bottle from IOMG to force through and so far, nobody has had big enough cojones to pull the trigger.
Non-Believer
The cost of the haulage of refuse to the EFWP will always be a factor. Bin wagons and their running and operating costs are eye watering. Having to haul from the north or south once or twice a day soon adds up in fuel, wages and repairs and running.

Absolutely scandalous, Ramsey have big management structures as well! Why go these little authorities need clerks, deputy clerks, finance managers, housing managers, waste managers etc etc? The pension contributions are enormous, isn’t it something like 27%? 1
Two-lane
Last year's accounts for Evesham (population about 24,000,) town council showed staff costs of £361,819. Last year's accounts for Ramsey (population about 8,000) town council showed staff costs of £906,800. 1 2 1
