Howard's Wood

The NPM has picked up on the story of the state of condition of the Peoples Wood, with the DEFA Minister Nurse Clare in bullshit mode. This episode will probably upset Barclays Bank who contributed a large sum of funds with DEFA making up the shortfall. As CM Cannan is now obsessing with the private sector doing the heavy lifting, when their is public/private collaboration, it’s not being fruitful due to neglect.

Seeing as they partly funded it, were involved in it, you would have hoped for a bit more from DEFA, the number of tree officers they employ. Or was this another example of something being pushed through without consultation of those who might be able to give some meaningful advice?

As everyone else has said, this sum's up IOM.gov perfectly.

Mind you, in fairness to DEFA, they did have a LOT of man hours tied up staking out Dan, harassing Dan, litigating against Dan at the time, to ensure 'access' to a piece of woodland they might* have owned and, would you believe it, totally failed to maintain. Unless the dumped cars etc were an ecological niche.

It’s a typical couldn’t give a shit attitude, coupled with the new trend from IOMG of constant dickwaving on Facebook. Laxey has a new playground and IOMG has done a video on Facebook. Needless costly publicity which isn’t needed, except to justify for the amount of civil servants.

I think the playground and the sprucing up of Laxey Glen Gardens is more to do with Edd @ Laxey Pavilion than Govt.

It was a condition of his lease that he 'maintain' the Glen.  Despite no maintenance occurring there in about 15 years previously.

Oh no.  It must be left exactly as it is as a suitable memorial to the Quayle years, when every government action was intended to look good in a press release rather than do any actual good to the Island.

Agree it should be allowed to stay in that state forever now as a tribute to the IOMs most overrated farmer who clearly couldn’t even plant a few trees successfully.

And whichever arboreal genius picked the location and decided upon a planting layout that few trees were going to survive. More than likely an equally overrated DEFA official who planned the whole thing from the comfort of his office with a map.

It's the absolute waste of money that grinds...reportedly £81k of Govt money and a big top up from Barclays(?). With what to show for it? One or two other plaques need erecting there, just pointing out a few salient facts.

There are actually a couple of places on the Isle where there are established and mature Oak Trees very close to the sea.  One is just north of Laxey, past the never-ending bend and they are literally 50 meters from the sea and about 50 meters up on the cliffs.  So, I'm not so sure about the claims that they are the 'wrong type of tree in the wrong place'.

Probably too close to one another, but I'm assuming this is to allow for some sort of wastage/die-back that will thin out the woods as they grow.

wasn't his name on the plaque was it ??

Don't know. It was difficult to make any sense of him whatsoever.

The fact he was irate when he called, despite this being something he's clearly thought of over time as opposed to something that's just happened, was slightly worrying.
