Not 100% correct.  Nuclear yes, smart no.  This conflict has exposed Russia as a bit of a paper tiger when it comes to its alleged hi-tech kit.  Their top of the range tanks (armata) and aircraft (su-57) are few on the ground and rarely brought into theatre at all.  Their Navy is pretty much non existent now in the Black Sea and a joke everywhere else.  They are now fielding 1960s tanks and importing drones amongst other stuff from China, Iran and N Korea.  Some of their missile stuff is ok, but there is a reason the big attacks only occur sporadically, as they are straight out of the factory.

It was different during the Cold War, when their equipment was comparable to that of the West.  All they really have going for them now, are shit loads of troops and dumb weaponry mixed with a complete absence of morality regarding their expenditure and use.  But it might be enough.

@The Phantom

I was simply pointing out the differences between fighting an insurgency and fighting the Russians.

We do agree though:

t's an unusual situation on the ground as well. The much vaunted Red Army, which cast a shadow over Europe since their victory in Stalingrad in 1943, has been found to be not fit for purpose to fight a modern war with "smart" weapons. Which are getting smarter all the time. Whereas the Russian tactics, which rolled back the German forces all the way to Berlin, haven't changed at all. Except for the inclusion of WMD deployment that is.

So I expect the situation to remain pretty much static until the US elections. With the Russians taking huge losses trying to inch forward with the Ukrainians hoping they'll get lucky with air superiority and a breakthrough...

I'm sure I've probably quoted this on here before, but...

"Russia has a large and modern military.  But the large part isn't modern and the modern part isn't large"

Looks like something got lost in translation:

UK may well have “given permission” as supplier, ie from the stock of which military they are to be delivered. That may be more political than actual. Pretty sure France has last word as manufacturer/vendor to UK.

Its quite normal, even between NATO allies for sale on/supply onward restrictions and consent terms are included.

Think of it as a type of dual factor authorisation.

Many of you will hopefully recall the horrors of Bucha.   The mass murder of civilians and POWs by the Russians.  This included almost all of the men of the town.  Most of the rest are fighting on the front.  The town has now put together an all female anti aircraft and territorial defence battalion.

They have named themselves "The Witches of Bucha"

There are quite a few in the Labour Party that are Putin apologists. It will be interesting to see how Sir Keir keeps them in check. There are also more than a few in the Labour Party who are apologists for Hamas , Hezbollah and that lot in Yemen whose name escapes me.  Having said that being held to ransom by his union paymasters might take up most of his valuable time. Rachel Reeves approach really does confuse me. Surely investment in infrastructure ( you know roads and rail ) boosts growth through jobs , money pumped into the economy and resultant tax take and the resultant economic benefits of improved mobility. After all the introduction of rail travel in Victorian times turbo charged the economy.

First F-16s have now arrived in Ukraine.

Also a suprise prisoner swap today mainly with the recently charged Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. marine Paul Whelan (who was looked over in swaps with that US Basketball woman) plus 24 others from Western Countries.   Swapped for real Russian spies and assassins.
