Max Power
I don't think anyone wants to stop kids being kids, as long as I can be a grown up and clip them around the ear now and then!

Sadly , and surprisingly you seem totally out of touch with what kids want and do these days. Kids have every oportunity to 'be kids' and always have had but interests and needs have changed massively. As I said in another post platstation/ X box and the likes and on line chat has taken over from lots of traditional activites . And am speaking as someone whos coached sport to young people for many years.
TheTeapot
Douglas Corporation would rather blow hundreds of thousands of pounds on illegal vehicles, shit cleaning solutions and statues than new park equipment and sheltered areas for kids to hang about in. Then they have to come up with absurd crap to make it look like they care while people complain constantly about antisocial behaviour. Swings and roundabouts or something. 1

The Bastard
4 hours ago, Amadeus said: God forbid we let kids be kids. Seriously, sometimes... No objection to kids being kids, but the idea seems a bit ill-thought-out, like the Gas Vans, a good idea but hasn't had any due diligence - seems to be the new hallmark of DBC. As other posters have pointed out, there are already dedicated play parks for kids in Douglas which have equipment and safety provisions, rather than running around on tarmac and drains in between vehicles. What happens when a kid damages something expensive, runs into an unclosed road or cracks their head open on the tarmac ? Since it's an organised event with an official road closure, presumably such a scheme would need some form of liability insurance to be in place - who pays ? Would there be risk assessments, a designated first aider, child protection officer, safety inspector as is enforced to an anal degree for any other kind of event ? Does the road get swept specially to remove the broken glass and syringes ? Would the money this costs be better spent on emptying the bins, as you'd expect from a council ? You mention people parking elsewhere during "play days" but there are already limited spaces in the busiest areas, hence the need for parking permit zones. Look at how much a pain in the arse it was for residents during street works in central Douglas, playing musical chairs between zones. That didn't make everyone best buddies. Not everyone is going to cooperate either - say for example that you had an unbalanced taxi driver that didn't move one of his many vehicles. Does DBC pay to have them towed away, or does it pay for the damage when the panels get dented ? I suspect it won't build bridges, it will alienate neighbours from neighbours, particularly considering that (as others have pointed out) that there are ample parks, green space, forest schools, skate parks, beaches, glens and sports centres that are doing the same job with better, safer equipment. IMHO DBC should fix up the busted equipment that the council is supposed to maintain, organise play days, or a try-a-sport days in Noble's Park, the play parks, green space, beaches or the NSC instead. It should be law. Simple. they’ve just resurfaced Glen Maye and not one car will ever drive on it. They should have resurfaced one side of the road only. Waste of taxes. doc.fixit
Back to the play streets. It never ceases to amaze me that the instigators of many of these new ideas can't deal with criticism unless it is to call the people who disagree with them, crabs or doom-mongers. Does it not ever enter these idea folk that maybe, the criticisms are valid and based on years of experience or observation. Maybe it would help if the elected few listened and also did their best to repair, maintain and make life easier for their constituents. 1
cissolt
This is the second green policy misrepresented by DBC a something different. The move to fortnightly bin collection was mooted as being due to increased costs at the incinerator, when it was in fact aimed at making people recycle. My honest with your rate payers and you might receive better feedback 2
Boris Johnson
This is not the 50s, kids dont want to play in the street outside their homes anymore. They only did in the 50s because there was no where else to play, there were far less cars, none parked up and the suburbs with gardens had not been built. It wont even work anyway. Put out a road closed sign and the next resident that needs to park outside their house will have to move it to get to their house, they wont, in most cases, put the sign back..... TheTeapot
So not only have they halved bin collections, they're halving your bins too* https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/douglas-council-further-reduce-waste-collection-service/ *(Well, that's if you have two bins, in Colby where collections are fortnightly you get two bins)
Gizo
Another 20pages of moaning ratepayers. Just deal with it. It’s happening. Stop buying shit from china, and Amazon. Buy local, go to the shops before they become extinct, stop buying food online and recycle. and guess what you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
