Maybe some local youths were drag racing in the car park and the local zealots got muddled.

The second caller obviously has no children.    When I asked mine , many years ago what they had done that day the usual reply was…..nothing ……or if they were in a talkative mood….nothing much, if I asked them had they had a good day the usual answer was….boring.    However they all did well enough.   I think children do not encourage questions because when they reply parents then ask them a question about their answer and so on.

Same here.  The best way to close down communication with your kids was to ask them how their day at school was.  However, you just have to watch out for signs that 'stuff ain't right' and then gently ease into it.

As kids grow up, they start to want their personal space and privacy, that is natural.  Your role is to be there when things go beyond what they feel able to cope with.

Oh, and pay for stuff and ferry them to and from various social engagements!

Top tip, though, if you want to talk to them, do it in the car.  Because you are focused on the road and not looking earnestly and searchingly into their eyes, they feel more able to open up. Truly.

I once tried this kind of stuff with my son, at an age when I thought reasonable communication was possible - I said "Have you done Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle in Physics yet?". He just gave me a vague look and said "I can't be sure", turned around and wandered off. No point trying again.

At least you knew where he was.
